IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL This notice applies to your Grand Design , VIN NHTSA Recall No. 22V-618 August 24, 2022 Dear Grand Design RV Owner: This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Grand Design RV has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2022 & 2023 Grand Design Momentum fifth wheel units. ! IMPORTANT! ► Your vehicle falls within the recall population. ► You should immediately schedule an appointment with your dealer to have your vehicle repaired. Why is a recall being conducted? A defect with Lippert PRXl Power Ramp Door mechanism was determined to exist in certain 2022 & 2023 Grand Design Momentum fifth wheels produced between November 5, 2021, and July 28, 2022. The power cut-off switch may fail allowing continuous power to the electric winch which lowers and raises the ramp door. Were the cutoff switch to fail, the winch may continue to run, allowing the cable system to unwind itself with the door is in a closed position. Accordingly, a recall to address this issue is being initiated effective August 24, 2022. Affected vehicles include 2022 & 2023 Grand Design Momentum produced between November 5, 2021, and July 28, 2022. The VIN range of affected units is: Momentum FW – 573FM4634N1121616 through 573FM4122P1123852 (non-sequential) The defect involves the power cut-off switch in the Lippert PRX1 Power Ramp Door. The power cut-off switch may fail allowing continuous power to the electric winch that lowers and raises the ramp door. Were the cut-off switch to fail, the winch may continue to run, allowing the cable system to unwind itself when the door is in a closed position. The winch is connected to a cable that raises and lowers the ramp door. On affected units, the cut-off switch may fail allowing continuous power to the winch which can allow the cables that assist in retracting the ramp door to unspool. Were this to occur, when the ramp door is lowered again, the loose cable will allow the door to freefall. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Were the ramp door to freefall, the user could be injured by the freefalling door. Description of the Cause : Cut-off switch may fail, allowing the power winch to continue operating when the ramp door is closed. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : Customer may detect the sound of the winch motor continuing to run after the ramp door has completely closed. Grand Design put a shipping hold on all units equipped with this ramp door and ceased usage in production. 8/4/22 – All transport companies and dealerships were contacted with a directive to return units to Grand Design. 8/5/22 – Grand Designed determined the scope of affected units. 8/8/2022 – The initial scope was expanded to include four prototype units built with the ramp door in late 2021/early 2022. 8/9/22 – The Product Safety Review Committee met to review findings where they determined a field action was necessary. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Grand Design will replace the defective door mechanism with a mechanism that does not operate on electric. Owners that have paid to have this service performed will be reimbursed by Grand Design for any expenses incurred relating to the defect. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy component is not a powered ramp door system. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Use of the defective components was suspended immediately and replaced with a different door mechanism that does not require the use of an electric winch and pully system to open or close.
