Other units do not use this steering gear Production Dates : JAN 01, 2022 – AUG 12, 2022 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : A small number of steering gears were assembled without the required number of recirculating balls. The recall population was determined by identifying the oldest production lot associated with a gear failure, and including all production from that lot to the date in February 2022 when the improvements in the assembly process were instituted. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : A steering hear with fewer than the required number of recirculating balls may bind when loads are applied. In some cases the balls may align on the same side of the gear’s worm-shaft and concentrated loads may cause the gear’s internal parts to fracture resulting in loss of vehicle steering. Loss of steering increases the likelihood of a crash. Sheppard Co., Inc. Address : 101 Philadelphia Street P.O. Box 877 Hanover Pennsylvania 17331-0877 Country : United States Chronology : Seagrave was notified by NHTSA of Sheppard Inc filing on 7/18/2022. Seagrave then began requesting information from Sheppard and received the suspected serial numbers involved on 7/26/2022. Seagrave began inspecting all of our inventory as well as trucks in production for the suspected serial numbers. All but one serial number was found. Serial number 21K15024. This information was provided to Seagraves Safety Group and on 8/11/2022 the Seagrave Safety Group voted to move forward with the submission of the recall. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Units will be inspected for serial number 21K15024. Any unit found containing this serial number will have the steering gear replaced at no change to the customer. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy component will have the correct number of circulated balls Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : 8/11/2022 was when the issue was fixed in production at Seagrave Fire Apparatus Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : Seagrave will send out Owner and Dealer Notifications no later then 10/09/2022.
