Steering Column Pinch Bolt Improperly Secured

An improperly secured steering column shaft pinch bolt can bind, causing a sudden loss of steering and increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Autocar, LLC (Autocar) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Autocar Xpeditor vehicles. The steering column shaft pinch bolt may be improperly secured.

 

Remedy

Dealers will replace the steering column shaft pinch bolt, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on December 19, 2022. Owners may contact Autocar customer service at 1-888-218-3611. Autocar’s number for this recall is ACX-2206.

AUTOCAR, LLC SAFETY RECALL ACX-2206

 

SUBJECT:

Autocar, LLC has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Xpeditor (ACX) chassis. The steering column shaft pinch bolts may not be properly secured.

 

SAFETY RECALL INFORMATION:

This Recall bulletin provides instructions regarding replacement and securing of the steering column shaft pinch bolts.

 

VEHICLES AFFECTED:

There are 2136, 2021-2023 model year ACX (Xpeditor) chassis manufactured between January 4, 2021, and April 1, 2022, with non-sequential serial numbers in the range of 234541 through 241051. To determine if a vehicle is affected by this Recall, log in to the Autocar Warranty Management System at www.autocartruck.com. From the main menu, select “View Recalls/ Service Programs” and look for the Autocar Recall number above. A spreadsheet file will be accessible with the VIN list of affected vehicles. Alternatively, to determine if a single vehicle is affected, select “VIN Profile” from the main menu in the Autocar Warranty Management System. In the “Chassis Number” field, enter the last 6 of the VIN. Once the VIN profile is displayed, scroll down to the “Recall/Service Program Information” section to determine if the Recall is open.

 

REQUIRED PARTS:

(1) S3812000K003 Service Kit
(2) S3810009-001 Bolt and nut

 

STEERING COLUMN BOLTS

1. Follow all lockout/tagout procedures and verify the battery disconnect switch is in the “OFF” position. If the unit is not equipped with a battery disconnect switch, disconnect the battery cables beginning with the negative cables, followed by the positive cables.

Note: Due to design variations, the steering column shaft illustrations are for reference only and may differ from your specific application.

2. Unlock and open the cab doors and locate the steering column shaft (see Figures 1, 2 and 3).

3. Remove and discard the steering column pinch bolt and nut at the base of the steering column or miter box (see Figures 1, 2 and 3).

4. Verify the steering column shaft is fully installed onto the steering column. At the base of the steering column or miter box, install (1) S38100009-001 bolt and nut, verify the bolt passes through the groove of the steering column and tighten to 75 Lbs.-ft. of torque (see Figure 4).

5. Close the cab doors.

6. Raise the cab in accordance with the following safety precautions and procedures.

7. Locate the steering miter box and steering column shaft (see Figures 5 and 6).

8. Remove and discard the steering column shaft pinch bolt and nut at the miter box.

9. Verify the steering column shaft is properly installed. Install (1) S38100009-001 Bolt and nut at the steering column miter box,verify the bolt passed through the groove in the miter box shaft and tighten to 75 Lbs.-ft. of torque (see Figure 4).

10. Lower the cab.

11. Turn on the battery disconnect or reconnect the battery cables beginning with the positive cables, followed by the negative cables.

12. Repairs are complete.

Chronology :

August 2, 2022, during a routine inspection Autocar personnel identified a steering column shaft improperly installed and an investigation was begun.

September 30, 2022-October 11, 2022, all suspect units were quarantined and inspected, Autocar personnel identified two steering column shafts improperly installed and a clean point was established for production.

October 14, 2021, all relevant information was presented to Autocar management team and out of an abundance of caution Autocar decides to perform a voluntary safety recall.
