The issue has been traced to a specific date range of fuel pumps by the fuel pump manufacturer. We have been given a list of all VINs that received fuel pumps with these date codes on them. Out of an abundance of caution, Genuine has chosen to issue a NHTSA recall to replace all fuel pumps on affected vehicles remedying this issue. Models Affected: 2022 Model Year Buddy Kick 125 Technical Issue: During operation, loss of motor power to the scooter can occur without warning. This could result in a loss of motive power, which can increase the risk of an accident. Remedy: To remedy, the fuel pump will be replaced on affected vehicles. This problem will be resolved at no charge to the consumer. Genuine will issue recall documentation to all registered consumers within the affected VIN range. We will instruct the customer to reach out to their dealer to schedule the repair. Dealers will then submit a warranty claim for the affected VIN, and we will ship the parts to the dealer. Upon completion of the repair, we ask that the dealer take a photo that shows the new fuel pump installed in the bike, with the metallic date code sticker visible. 2700 W. A specific part number and labor code have been created for this recall. Enter in Part Number TS-BA5218000001 quantity 1. This covers all parts necessary to complete the recall. In early July of 2022, our warranty department reported that several dealers had submitted warranty claims for failed fuel pumps on the Buddy Kick model. We ran a warranty report analysis and determined that the fuel pumps that had all failed within the first 500 miles of vehicle operation and seemed to be confined to a specific range of VIN numbers. We reported our findings to the factory based in Taiwan. The factory subsequently requested defect samples of the failed fuel pumps. We obtained samples from our dealer network and sent the defective fuel pumps to the factory in August. The factory worked with the fuel pump supplier to analyze the defective fuel pump samples. The fuel pump supplier provided feedback at the end of September that the manufacturing tolerances on the fuel pump had changed and were too close causing the pump impeller to contact the pump body with subsequent failure of the fuel pump. The fuel pump manufacturing process was evaluated and adjusted in October to ensure the tolerances were within the proper specifications to prevent future pump failures. The factory confirmed fuel pumps could be manufactured with the correct tolerances in November and subsequently a recall has been issued to remedy. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : To remedy, the fuel pumps of bikes within this VIN range will be replaced with new production fuel pumps with the proper manufacturing tolerances between the pump impeller and the pump body. This problem will be resolved at no charge to the consumer. On the remedied fuel pumps, the dimension of the fuel pump impeller has been changed to ensure sufficient space exists between the pump impeller and pump body. Proper manufacturing tolerances ensure the pump impeller does not come into contact directly with the pump body during use. The fuel pump failures seemed to be confined to a specific range of VIN numbers. On July 26th, 2022, we reported our internal warranty analysis to the vehicle factory based in Taiwan. On August 1st, 2022, the factory subsequently requested defect samples of the failed fuel pumps. We obtained defect samples from our dealer network and sent the defective fuel pumps to the factory. On August 12, 2022, the factory confirmed receipt of the defect samples sent. By this point in time, 19 fuel pump failures had been reported. The factory worked with the fuel pump supplier to analyze the defective fuel pump samples. The vehicle manufacturer provided feedback to Genuine on September 28th, 2022, that the manufacturing tolerances on the fuel pump were too close causing the pump impeller to contact the pump body with subsequent failure of the fuel pump. Following the analysis, the fuel pump manufacturing process was evaluated and adjusted in October to ensure the tolerances were within the proper specifications to prevent future pump failures. On November 14th, 2022, the factory confirmed fuel pumps could be manufactured with the correct tolerances. At this point in time, 31 fuel pump failures had been reported. On November 17th, the factory confirmed they could supply all the fuel pumps required to facilitate the recall for the affected models and subsequently a recall was issued to remedy.
