Incorrect Horn Contact Plate may Disable ESC

If the steering angle sensor is damaged, the ESC sensor may malfunction, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Summary

PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain model year 2015 Peterbilt 389 Pride and Class edition vehicles manufactured October 1, 2014, to December 4, 2014, and equipped with electronic stability control (ESC). The affected vehicles were manufactured with an incorrect horn contact plate that may damage the ESC steering angle sensor.

Remedy

Peterbilt will notify owners, and dealers will replace the horn contact plate and the ESC steering angle sensor, free of charge. The recall began on March 6, 2015. Owners may contact Peterbilt customer service at 1-940-591-4000. PACCAR’s number for this recall is 115A.

Pride and Class with Electronic Stability Control Steering Wheel Interference

Introduction

Peterbilt Motors Company has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model 389 vehicles that were ordered with the Pride and Class option and Electronic Stability Control. Your vehicle has been identified as having the Pride and Class option and Electronic Stability Control. On these vehicles equipped with Electronic Stability Control, the steering wheel assembly contains an incorrect horn contact plate. The contact plate could damage the Electronic Stability Control sensor mounted below the steering wheel due to insufficient clearance.

This could result in a malfunction of the Electronic Stability Control system, which could increase the risk of a crash causing Injury and/or damage to property.

Resolution

The dealer will replace the horn contact plate and any damaged Electronic Stability Control sensor.

It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease new vehicles covered by this recall until the defect or noncompliance has been corrected.

Warranty

Peterbilt will reimburse the dealer for parts and labor plus applicable mark up.

The SIR system will indicate chassis involved in this field repair with the designator for “115-A”. If

the vehicle is affected and is shown to have an open campaign, please complete the work and file a claim “115-A”.

Please Note:

Parts for the contact horn plate (T782V1P) are available from PPD or thru VIP DSP program at PACCAR Parts. Dealers can order the Sensor Service Kit (455083X1) truck down and PPD can expedite.

Labor

Peterbilt will reimburse the dealer 1.2 hours labor for installing each steering angle sensor and replacing the horn contact plate.

Procedure

Remove Horn Button and disconnect the wire
Remove Steering Wheel Nut (must be W34-6008)
Remove Steering Wheel
Remove and replace incorrect horn contact plate (see procedure below)
Remove and replace the damaged steering angle sensor and torque per procedure below.
