Incompatible Miter Box May Cause Loss of Steering

Summary
Lion Electric Company (Lion) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Lion6 and Lion8 vehicles. The miter gear box in the steering system may be incompatible with other steering system components, which can result in a complete loss of steering control.
Remedy
Lion Electric Company technicians will replace the miter gear box, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 7, 2023. Owners may contact Lion customer service at 1-855-546-6706.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Lion Electric Company has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2019-2023 Lion6 and Lion8 vehicles.
Description of the defect
The mitre box input and output shaft size used in the steering system is not compatible with the connections of the other steering system components which could lead to play in the splines. To eliminate the backlash, The hardware could have been wrongfully tightened to a higher torque than specified which could lead to premature failure of the hardware. Without the higher torque, the play in the connexions can lead to damaged splines, causing a complete loss of steering control and increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective measures and precautions
A team of technicians will be dispatched by Lion Electric to change the components and the hardware.
Lion Electric will contact you as soon as possible to determine the date of the recall, which will be done at the company’s expense by one of our technicians.
If an anomaly is detected, you must contact The Lion Electric immediately at this toll-free number: 1 855 546-6706 ext.: 229 and not use the identified vehicle.
Following your report of the defect to Lion Electric, they will contact you shortly to determine the date to perform the service.

Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : First, a notice will be sent to the owners of the impacted vehicles advising
them of the defect and the precautions to take regarding their vehicle. Lion will then contact each customer to determine a date of intervention where a team of technicians will be dispatched to replace the mitre gear for the new model.
All costs will be covered by the Lion Electric Company under the warranty program.
How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production :
The new mitre box input and output shaft will have a better fit with the other components of the steering system which will eliminate the play in the splines connexions.
The recall condition was corrected in production with the implementation of the new mitre box on January 24th, 2023.
