Shyft Group
is recalling certain 2022-2023 Spartan RV
K1, K2, K3, and K4 motorhome chassis. A vehicle control module software error may cause loss of drive power or loss of key safety functions, such as loss of head lights or windshield wipers.
Remedy
Shyft Group
will update the vehicle control module software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 17, 2023. Owners may contact Shyft Group
customer service at 1-800-237-7806. Shyft Group

What is the problem?
The vehicle control module is subject to a software error.
What is the risk to motor vehicle safety?
The software error could result in inadvertent loss of motive power and other key safety functions such as loss of head lamps or windshield wipers. This could occur without warning and increase the risk of a crash.
What should the final stage manufacturer do?
On the attached document, you will find a list of Spartan RV
chassis that have been sold to you. If you agree the identified chassis, contains a safety defect, you are reminded of your responsibility to notify the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in accordance with 49 C.F.R. 573. It is a violation of federal regulation to sell a vehicle subject to a safety recall without the recall first being remedied.
What will Shyft do?
The vehicle control module will be reprogrammed with corrected software. This will be done at no charge.
We will notify owners of the affected vehicles and direct them to the nearest service center to have the remedy applied.

Chronology :
On December 14, 2022, Product Safety and Compliance was made aware of a single customer complaint involving loss of motive power. On January 13, 2023 and January 14, 2023, two more complaints were received involving loss of key safety functions. After identifying the issue to be associated with a software change on January 26, 2023, Shyft identifying the affected VIN’s. The population of VIN’s was finalized on February 1, 2023 and on February 2, 2023, Shyft determined there is a safety related defect in the affected chassis.

Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The vehicle control module software version subject to this recall is v1.2. Remedied vehicle control modules will be at software v1.3.
