Incompatible Steering System Draglink

A damaged steering system can result in a loss of vehicle handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Gillig, LLC (Gillig) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Low Floor transit and shuttle buses. Incompatible steering system draglink parts may have been installed during the vehicle assembly process, potentially resulting in long-term damage of the steering system.

 

Remedy

Gillig will inspect and, when necessary, replace and tighten the draglink rod, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 29, 2023. Owners may contact Gillig customer service at 1-510-264-5073 or 1-800-735-1500.

What The Issue Is:

GILLIG has determined that incorrect draglink parts may have been installed during the vehicle assembly process. The affected part numbers are #05-35402-000 and #05-35402-004. An incorrect draglink match may potentially result in long-term damage of the steering system, affect vehicle controllability and increase the risk of a crash.
As a result of the above, GILLIG has decided to voluntarily initiate a safety recall campaign for the vehicle population that may be affected by the issue.

 

What We Are Asking You To Do:

1. We are asking you to follow a procedure to inspect and, when necessary, replace and/or re-torque all the affected parts.

2. After the completion of the procedure, return the VIN sheet stating that the recall service has been completed.

 

What GILLIG Will Do For You:

1. GILLIG will provide a procedure with clear instructions on how to perform the inspection and, when necessary, the replacement and/or re-torque of all affected parts to the manufacturer specifications

2. When needed, GILLIG will supply all necessary replacement parts.

3. GILLIG will pay a reasonable warranty claim for performing this function. GILLIG estimates a maximum time of 30 min. per vehicle required to perform this function.

Chronology :

01/19/2023 – First report of a wrong draglink potentially installed on a limited population of battery-electric and hybrid buses.

01/20/2023 – Factory stop-ship implementation. The suspect bus configurations are held at the factory for inspection.

01/27/2023 – Initiate production data review to confirm size of the impacted vehicle population.

02/01/2023 – GILLIG Field Service initiates full audit of battery electric buses in the field.

02/02/2023 – Production data analysis suggests the defect may involve a larger population of buses than previously identified. A pool of different powertrain configurations may be affected and have incorrect draglinks installed and/or clamp bolts torqued per incorrect specifications.

02/03/2023 – The GILLIG Safety Committee decides to file a safety recall with NHTSA.
