RRC-72-23-002-1: Replace Side Curtain Airbag Fasteners
Rivian has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain model year 2022 and 2023 Rivian R1S vehicles. On these vehicles, one or more of the fasteners that secure the right or left side curtain airbag to the vehicle may be improperly fastened. If the side curtain airbag is not properly secured to the vehicle, the airbag may not perform as intended and increase the risk of injury in certain crash conditions. Pursuant to its recall determination, Rivian will replace all potentially affected fasteners and make sure that they properly secure the airbags.

The potentially affected vehicle production began on October 28, 2022, when Rivian Automotive, LLC (“Rivian”) started to build vehicles with the suspect side curtain airbag fastenings and ended on January 21, 2023, when Rivian stopped building with the suspect fastenings. On February 16, 2023, Rivian identified a vehicle at the Normal vehicle assembly plant in which some of the side curtain airbag fasteners did not properly secure the airbag to the roof rail. The vehicle was inspected and an investigation into root cause and scope was initiated.
The investigation concluded on March 1, 2023. Rivian’s manufacturing data analysis identified 30 potentially affected vehicles.
On March 2, 2023, Rivian determined that a safety-related defect exists related to this matter.
As of the date of this filing, Rivian has not identified any field reports or warranty claims potentially related to this issue in any market.

Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : Rivian will inspect and, as necessary, properly secure the side curtain
airbag fasteners in the affected vehicles. In the unlikely event that components require replacement, Rivian will replace components, as necessary.
Rivian has a policy and practice of reimbursing owners who have paid for a repair that subsequently becomes the subject of a field action. To ensure consistency, Rivian, as part of the owner letter, will request that customers send the original receipt and/or other adequate proof of payment to the company for confirmation of the expense. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component :

Description of Recall Schedule : For any owners not contacted, we will mail notifications on or before
April 28, 2023. Rivian began telephoning customers on March 2, 2023. As a direct-to consumer manufacturer, Rivian owns and operates all of the Company’s sales and service operations. As all “dealers” are Rivian owned entities, notification will be through internal means to our licensed store and service operations addressing this recall on or before the date set forth in this response.
