Dear Field Van Owner,
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Field Van, Inc. has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2019-2022 Field Van Sprinter vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles.
WHAT IS THE ISSUE?
Warn Industries has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in the handheld remote-control device that was sold with WARN VR EVO winches. Remotes which have been exposed to or submerged in water have exhibited failures that can result in unintended winch operation, which increases the risk of injury. Only the remote is subject to this recall notice, the winch is not affected.
Products affected: Remotes shipped with all EVO winch models manufactured between June 3, 2019 to November 29, 2022.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
If your van has a WARN VR EVO installed, we ask you do the following:
1. Stop using the remote.
2. Visit https://www.warn.com/vr-evo-remote-info for instructions on how to inspect the remote for corrosion and removal of the battery pack to disable the wireless control function.
3. The remote can still be used to control the winch when physically plugged into the winch without the battery pack.
WHAT WILL WE DO?

Warn Industries is developing a replacement water-resistant remote control that it will make available to affected customers, at no charge, when the product is available.

Warn will replace your existing VR EVO Remote with a “corded-only” remote if any internal corrosion is observed when removing the battery pack

As compensation for losing the wireless functionality on your existing remote or a replacement “corded-only” remote, Warn Industries will provide current VR EVO winch owners with a $100 coupon valid toward the purchase of a new wireless remote product, or any other future purchase on www.warn.com.

• Registration and instructions on how to receive your coupon can be found at: www.warn.com/vr-evo-remote-info. Winch owners will be required to provide versification of battery pack removal and/or proof of the purchase to receive the coupon.

• The inspection and replacement will take approximately 5-10 minutes.

Descriptive Information : Field Van installed WARN Industries winches on our our Sprinter builds that are currently in Recall 22E-101.
The recall population includes all WARN VR EVO winches with wireless/corded remote. After investigating field reports of inadvertent activation, Warn determined that getting the remote control wet could result in water ingress and corrosion inside the remote control. This condition could lead to inadvertent activation. It was determined that this condition only affects remote controls with wireless capability that are not water proof. Field Van only installed the following items:

Description of the Defect : Ingress of water into the handheld remote control for the winch may result in corrosion on the circuit board. Water, and or corrosion on specific locations on the circuit board, may cause the winch to start operating when not intended, or to not turn off when switch button is released.

Description of the Safety Risk : Personal injury if winch operates unexpectedly. No injuries have been
reported associated with any product failures.
No significant property damage other than the winch system, winch mounting brackets and front bumpers have been reported as a result of corrosion related issues.

3/29/2023: We received an email from Choon Lee NHTSA Senior Safety Recall Specialist that Warn Industries was performing recall 22E101. After confirmation from Choon Lee we proceeded with our own recall submission on 4/13/2023. Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : Field Van will notify customers of the hazard including instructions for
inspecting for corrosion and disabling the wireless function to significantly mitigate the hazard. Warn will offer consumers/winch owners a $100 coupon as compensation for the lack of wireless function. Warn will also offer a new corded-only remote (no wireless function) to replace any remote that shows evidence of corrosion, unexpected operation of the winch, or for remotes that have been submerged or exposed to water. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Warn will rework all existing unsold inventory of winches, including distributor and dealer inventories, with a new corded-only remote which will have a conformal coated circuit board and sealed switch components, but without wireless function. A $100 coupon will be included with these winches as compensation for the lack of wireless function.
Removing the battery pack from the current remote control disables the wireless function controlling the winch, significantly mitigating the hazard. The remote remains fully usable in the corded configuration when physically plugged into the winch. Unplugging the remote from the winch when not in use eliminates the hazard. The new corded-only remote that will be used in reworked existing unsold inventory, will have a new switch face that is visually different from the current remote. It will not have wireless control functions, including wireless indicator light and mode switch. The internal circuit board will be fully conformal coated and use sealed switches. A new wireless/corded handheld remote is being designed for all new production winches.
The new wireless/corded remote currently being designed will have full conformal coating on the interior circuitry and sealed switches.
