All MDS-4-33 models are included in this recall notice, and were produced between January 1, 2021 and March 1, 2023. Production Dates : JAN 01, 2021 – MAR 01, 2023 Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : The design (shape) of the bulkhead wall is such that it is possible for an excessive accumulation of shredded paper in the space between the cutting knives and the bulkhead wall. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : As the knives rotate in the shredding chamber, it is possible to compress any build-up of shredded paper against the bulkhead wall, which generates friction and heat. The build-up and compression of excess shredded paper, combined with the friction-related heat build-up creates a potential fire risk. Description of the Cause : NR Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The presence of a burning odour, or visible smoke; visual inspection of the cutting chamber may reveal dark colouration or blueing of metal components, which indicates excessive heat. Concurrent to this, on March 23, 2023, our Service team received a customer inquiry which cited the same condition of smoking in the shredding chamber, which reinforced the findings from the new build in our factory. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the design of the bulkhead wall allows the excessive build-up of shredded paper and potential for friction-heating, which can, in turn, cause a fire. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The remedy program consists of a bulkhead wall retrofit kit, which includes the redesigned bulkhead wall and the associated items required for field installation. We will schedule the field installation with our customers, and the retrofits will be completed by Shred-Tech service technicians. All costs associated with installation of the retrofit will be at Shred-Tech’s expense. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The redesigned bulkhead wall is visibly different from the original bulkhead wall – the previous design has been removed from all bills of materials, and is no longer able to be installed on new builds. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The issue was identified in early March, 2023, on our production line – upon validation of the defect, a redesign of the bulkhead wall was completed and implemented. All new builds after March 24, 2023 have, and will be equipped with, the redesigned bulkhead wall.
