A coupler that separates can allow the trailer to disconnect from the tow vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
PJ Trailers is recalling certain 2022-2024 LD, LY, LX, LS, CC, DD, TJ, and TS trailers equipped with a Demco EZ Latch Gooseneck Coupler. The coupler mounting bolts may loosen and cause the coupler to separate from the inner tube.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the couplers, free of charge. Owner notification letter are expected to be mailed June 19, 2023. Owners may contact PJ Trailers customer service at 1-866-752-8781.

Chronology :
On April 27, 2023, PJ Trailers received an email from Josh Jaspers at Demco informing us that Demco felt it necessary to initiative a recall on all Generation B gooseneck couplers produced after June 15, 2022. PJ Trailers immediately identified and quarantined all Generation B products remaining in raw materials and all finished goods, which contained them. PJ Trailers immediately ceased application of couplers in production and stopped all shipments of all units with Gen B couplers.

The couplers have the potential for the mounting bolts to become un-torqued, and the coupler could separate from the inner tube. The Gen B coupler was placed into production on June 15, 2022, and removed from production on April 28, 2023, after Demco notified PJ Trailers of the issue. These were identified by VIN that have this type of coupler. Production Dates : JUN 15, 2022 – APR 28, 2023 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : These couplers have the potential for the mounting bolts to become un-torqued and for the coupler to separate from the inner tube. Based on the information from Demco, PJ Trailers decided to initiate a recall on Friday, April 28, 2023. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If the coupler mounting bolts become un-torqued and the coupler separates from the inner tube the coupler could become disconnected from the tow vehicle and cause property damage or bodily injury. Description of the Cause : Demco has not provided the reason for failure currently and continues to investigate. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : Coupler mounting bolts that become un-torqued could cause the coupler to loosen and create slack in the coupler tube. Demco will also provide replacement inner assemblies for all shipped units from June 15, 2022, through present. Replacements will be sent as needed and will be distributed to dealers accordingly for in field replacements. All new product still at plant locations and Dealers will be shipped back to Demco. All in field used parts are to be scrapped. PJ Trailers will provide the components and instructions for the field fix to dealers and customers and reimburse them for labor to inspect and perform the necessary repairs. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Replacement couplers will be fully welded to the inner tube Demco part number 17839. Recalled couplers are attached with four mounting bolts and are not welded.
