Summary
Ducati
North America (Ducati
) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Panigale V2 motorcycles. The dashboard could automatically switch from low beam headlights to the headlight daylight position lamp (DRL), in automatic setting mode. As such, these motorcycles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”
Remedy
Dealers will update the dashboard software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 20, 2023. Owners may contact Ducati
customer service at 1-888-391-5446. Ducati
’s number for this recall is SRV-RCL-23-003.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
Due to an error in the calibration of the instrument panel photodiode that controls activation and deactivation in automatic mode of the DRL (and consequent switching on and off of the low beam headlight), unwanted switching of the headlight from low beam to DRL mode may occur, with the potential risk of low beam deactivation when riding at night.
A new version of instrument panel software has been released, which correctly calibrates the photodiode function, preventing the condition described above.
The new instrument panel software is 1507_DSB_S029.
Service Solution
1. Connect the workshop power supply unit to the vehicle diagnostic port.
2. Connect the DDS 3.0 diagnosis instrument and automatically identify the model by selecting item “Identify model”.
3. A Global Scan will be suggested; perform the Global Scan, then the instrument panel software update will be suggested. Additional software updates for other control units will be suggested, if available.
Press “OK” to confirm/install.
4. The suggested software name is: 1507_DSB_S029.
NOTE
If the instrument panel control unit is already equipped with the new software, the DDS3.0 will not auto suggest the update.
5. Perform a Global Scan, make sure that the instrument panel software has been installed and check that there are no errors.
6. Disconnect the vehicle from the DDS3.0 and the workshop power supply unit.
Chronology :
On 02 27 23, following some reports from clients of malfunctions in the instrument panel automatic light switch of the backlight from day mode to night mode (and vice versa) and/or the headlight automatic switch from low beam to DRL (and vice versa), Ducati
carried out an analysis of the warranty claim data.
Here below are described the warranty claim with date, country and Client complaint description:
1. 05 16 22 FRANCE The instrument panel remains in night mode.
2.11 16 22 CHINA The backlight of the instrument is set in AUTO mode, and it will automatically switch from night mode to day mode when there is no light at night.
3.10 04 22 SPAIN The instrument panel does not change color correctly.
4.11 08 22 SPAIN The client comments that the automatic lights do not work.
5.12 14 22 JAPAN The backlight of the instrument panel becomes bright in the dark surroundings. Auto setting.
6. 01 16 23 CHINA The owner reported that the instrument panel backlight is abnormal, and the backlight is white in a dark environment.
7. 01 20 23 USA Instrument panel changes from night to day mode even without ambient light
8. 01 26 23 SPAIN The DRL light when it goes in automatic changes successively (especially at night) to low beam and vice versa. The instrument panel lighting also changes successively.
9. 02 08 23 USA Auto running light not working properly.
10. 02 14 23 UK Instrument panel keeps flipping between day and night mode.
During this analysis Ducati
requested the return of the dashboards replaced for this defect, to conduct quality analysis on the components, and started and internal investigation with the supplier’s support. The investigation’s found an incorrect calibration of the photodiode in the motorcycle dashboard software.
Ducati
has never received any reports of crash, injuries, or death.
On May 23rd, 2023 Ducati
Motor Holding’s internal safety commission decided to launch a recall campaign for the potentially affected bike population.
