FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If the steering column shaft is not properly welded, it could separate and result in a sudden loss of steering, increasing the risk of a crash. Description of the Cause : A manufacturing error resulted in improper welding. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : None. Involved Components : Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-416 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Component Name 1 : Steering Column Shaft Component Description : Universal Shaft / I-Shaft Component Part Number : JTEKT Part Number 4102306 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : JTEKT Column Systems North America Corp Address : Heavy Truck and Off-road 300 Albers Road Bronson Michigan 49028 Country : United States Chronology : May 18, 2023, Autocar was contacted by JTEKT and informed of potential lot numbers B123424 to B123427 containing 19 defective steering column shafts. May 23, 2023, Autocar begins an internal investigation and efforts to identify the location of the suspect parts lot. June 8, 2023, Autocar identified 39 potential units manufactured within the suspect date range and the suspect part numbers. A stop ship was issued, and a clean point established for production. Out of an abundance of caution Autocar decided to perform a voluntary Safety Recall. We have no known claims reports or complaints. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Autocar will voluntarily initiate an owner notification and recall of all affected vehicles. Autocar will distribute to owners of affected vehicles an Owner Notification Letter, which will describe the defect and provide instructions for scheduling the inspection/repair of the vehicle at no cost to the vehicle’s owner. The owner letter will instruct vehicle owners who have paid to have this condition remedied prior to this campaign to seek reimbursement pursuant to Autocar’s General Reimbursement Plan, on file with the agency pursuant to 49 C.F.R. 573.6(c)(8)(i) and 49 C.F.R 573.13 How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The steering column shafts will be inspected and or replaced at no charge to the owner. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : A stop ship was initiated and a clean point established for production.
