This includes 209 model year 2022 and 2023 vehicles. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Accumulation of coolant inside the battery pack may lead to an electrical short, increasing the risk of fire. Description of the Cause : Components of the battery cooling system inside the battery pack may leak. Leaking coolant may accumulate inside the battery pack and cause an electrical short, increasing the risk of fire. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : If the vehicle Main Battery Disconnect (MBD) is in the “ON” position, vehicle monitoring and safety systems are enabled and operating. If the vehicle Main Battery Disconnect (MBD) is “OFF” position, vehicle monitoring and safety systems are not enabled and operating. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-580 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Involved Components : Component Name 1 : NR Component Description : NR Component Part Number : NR Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : NR Address : NR NR Country : NR Chronology : 6/23/23 A fire occurred in single battery pack of a Nikola Tre BEV vehicle as it was being stored at the Nikola HQ Building overnight in Phoenix, AZ. The fire spread to four other parked vehicles. The fire was extinguished by the local fire department. There were no injuries. An internal Nikola investigation began that day. 6/26/23 An outside firm was hired to help with an investigation that began immediately. 8/10/23 A fire occurred in a Nikola Tre BEV validation vehicle parked outside of the Nikola factory in Coolidge, AZ in the early morning. The fire was confined to one battery pack and was quickly extinguished by the local fire department. There were no injuries and no damage to the rest of the truck. 8/10/23 In the afternoon, the outside firm presented its preliminary investigation to Nikola, indicating that a coolant leak was the likely cause of the fire. 8/11/23 The Nikola Vehicle Defects Technical Team met and recommended that a potential safety-related defect be presented to the Vehicle Defects Committee for recall consideration. The Nikola Vehicle Defects Committee met and determined that a safety-related defect existed in Nikola Tre BEV trucks and decided to issue a recall. Nikola issued a press release that afternoon which identified the defect and began contacting dealers and customers with interim safety instructions. 8/15/23 Nikola informed NHTSA of a recall. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-580 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The remedy is currently being developed. As an interim action, owners will be provided instructions to place and leave the Main Battery Disconnect (MBD) switch into the “ON” position at all times to enable realtime vehicle monitoring and safety systems operation and to consider parking trucks outside to allow for over-the-air updates and better connectivity with Fleet Command, Nikola’s truck monitoring system. Interim notification letters are expected to be mailed in August 2023. A second letter will be mailed once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Nikola Customer Service at (888)429-9216. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : NR Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Production of the Nikola Tre BEV is halted until remedy is developed and new corrected parts are available.
