Chronology :
6/23/23 A fire occurred in single battery pack
of a Nikola Tre BEV vehicle as it was being stored at the Nikola HQ Building overnight in Phoenix, AZ. The fire spread to four other parked vehicles. The fire was extinguished by the local fire department. There were no injuries. An internal Nikola investigation began that day.
6/26/23 An outside firm was hired to help with an investigation that began immediately.
8/10/23 A fire occurred in a Nikola Tre BEV validation vehicle parked outside of the Nikola factory in Coolidge, AZ in the early morning. The fire was confined to one battery pack
and was quickly extinguished by the local fire department. There were no injuries and no damage to the rest of the truck.
8/10/23 In the afternoon, the outside firm presented its preliminary investigation to Nikola, indicating that a coolant leak was the likely cause of the fire.
8/11/23 The Nikola Vehicle Defects Technical Team met and recommended that a potential safety-related defect be presented to the Vehicle Defects Committee for recall consideration. The Nikola Vehicle Defects Committee met and determined that a safety-related defect existed in Nikola Tre BEV trucks and decided to issue a recall. Nikola issued a press release that afternoon which identified the defect and began contacting dealers and customers with interim safety instructions.
8/15/23 Nikola informed NHTSA of a recall.
