It was determined the other production lines were using the correct process of installation. The line produced 58 trailers in that time frame that have this component at risk Production Dates : AUG 01, 2022 – JUL 31, 2023 VIN Range 1 : Begin : 5JX3U3621PE229740 End : 5JX3U4331RF231679 ✔ Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : It is possible the wire connections within the transfer switch could be under torqued FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If the connections are under torqued and are loose the connections could cause friction which could result in a thermal event Description of the Cause : This was a result from the improper tool being used for installation not providing the proper torque Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : A burnt smell or smoke from the transfer switch Involved Components : Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-590 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Component Name 1 : 50A Transfer Switch w/Reverse Polarity Component Description : 50A Transfer Switch w/Reverse Polarity Component Part Number : 0019561 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : NR Address : NR NR Country : NR Chronology : We had a warranty claim of a transfer switch smoking and burnt wires. Our service department found a separate unit with loose connections in the transfer switch. This initiated an investigation. After the investigation was performed it was found that the improper tool was being used to attach the wires in the transfer switch which could result in the connections being loose. It was decided on 8/17/23 to continue with a NHTS recall to have these connections checked for proper torque. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : ATC will supply work instructions and any parts applicable to any damaged components if needed. Work instructions will be sent to the dealers and retail customers. The repair facility will be allotted 15 minutes for the torque check procedure and will be reimbursed accordingly. If a customer or dealer has incurred any costs related to this defect prior to the notification those costs will be reimbursed. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Once the torque is checked and torque specifications are acquired the connections would be tight and not be at risk of causing friction to heat up. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : When this risk was found all trailers on premises were checked and torqued if needed. The process on line was immediately rectified and proper tools were initiated in the on line operation and followed up with QC. Why Is a Recall Being Conducted? The trailer specified may potentially have loose wire connections within the transfer switch which could cause friction, increasing the risk of a fire. Connections within the transfer switch must be torqued to the proper specifications, free of charge. ATC strongly recommends this service be done at an authorized service facility to ensure proper torquing is attained. Safety of all past and present ATC trailers is our top priority.
