Production Dates : JAN 08, 2021 – MAY 12, 2021 Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : Certain fuel pump impellers produced from certain lots between January 2021 and May 2021 might exhibit deformation while vehicles are in operation. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If there is deformation of the fuel pump impeller, it may lead to a failure of the fuel pump, in which case the vehicle could lose propulsion, which may increase the risk of crash or injury. Description of the Cause : The fuel pump impellers produced from certain lots between January 2021 and May 2021 were made of certain raw materials which were at lower levels than the raw materials used in other lots, and when such characteristics were combined with environmentally-linked conditions such as high ambient temperature, deformation of the fuel pump impeller may occur. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : Before the fuel pump is switched off, the driver may be made aware of a malfunction by a warning message in the instrument cluster and might notice the engine running rough. Mercedes-Benz retrieved fuel pumps from the field and began evaluating them. According to Hyundai Motor America, a warranty claim dated September 2, 2022 indicated a stall/ hesitation condition. In late 2022 and early 2023, Mercedes-Benz and Hyundam Industrial Co., Ltd. evaluated the material and production processes at Hyundam Industrial Co., Ltd. and Hyundam Industrial Co., Ltd.’s sub-suppliers. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23E-068 Page 5 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 From January 2023 to May 2023, Hyundai Motor America evaluated five fuel pumps recovered from vehicles which experienced inconsistent power delivery. Mercedes-Benz and Hyundam Industrial Co., Ltd. also separately conducted several tests to evaluate the fuel pump impeller. These tests evaluated the raw materials and injection molding process for the fuel pump impeller. Hyundam Industrial Co., Ltd.’s investigation revealed that the fuel pump impellers produced from certain lots between January 2021 and May 2021 were made of certain raw materials which were at lower levels than the raw materials used in other lots, and when such characteristics were combined with environmentally-linked conditions such as high ambient temperature, deformation of the fuel pump impeller may occur. Hyundam Industrial Co., Ltd. changed its raw material supplier and instituted safeguards and quality controls for the injection molding supplier to accommodate Mercedes-Benz’s requests. Through May of 2023, Hyundam Industrial Co., Ltd. and Mercedes-Benz conducted further testing and analyses to identify potential influencing factors and determine potential consequences of material and process anomalies at different steps of the production process. Through August of 2023, Hyundam Industrial Co., Ltd. and Hyundai Motors conducted analyses of raw materials and vehicle tests to identify and confirm the cause of the impeller swelling. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Authorized Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai dealerships will replace the fuel delivery module on the affected vehicles. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Hyundam Industrial Co., Ltd.’s investigation confirmed that fuel pump impellers produced before January of 2021 and after May of 2021 were manufactured with raw materials with higher material property values than the fuel pump impellers subject to recall. Furthermore, the remedy components were produced using a different raw material supplier.
