We have a list of 36 VINs that may be affected with 5 in the process of being repaired or already repaired. They are Starcraft Ford F650 buses specifically with a front stabilizer bar Production Dates : DEC 10, 2020 – APR 05, 2023 Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : Based on information gathered from the field, Trans/Air has become aware of an issue on a small number of Starcraft Ford F650 buses, where in isolated instances, when equipped with an optional stabilizer / sway bar, the compressors may contact the bar. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : This could result in a catastrophic failure of the compressor mount which potentially could result in any number of adverse safety conditions including loss of mode of power, which in turn could affect steering. Description of the Cause : The mounts allow the compressors to hang too low and may contact the vehicles optional front stabilizer bar. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23E-082 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : Operator may hear a bump/clunk of the compressors hitting the sway bar. Involved Components : Component Name : Compressor Mount Component Description : Dual Compressor Mount for 13cid and 15cid compressors Component Part Number : 4013775-02 Component Name : Compressor Mount Component Description : Dual Compressor Mount for 10cid compressors Component Part Number : 4013775-01 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Trans-Air Manufacturing Address : 480 East Locust St Dallastown Pennsylvania 17313 Country : United States Chronology : In August of 2022 we received a report of a non delivered vehicle with (13cid) compressors hitting stabilizer bar. After a lot of research it was determined that the models that Ford sent us did not have stabilizer bar. We prototyped numerous mounts until we developed one that was acceptable to our quality and engineering departments. By that point there were 4 vehicles with this issue. They were all repaired in April of 2023. We were under the impression that there were no other issues, until we received a report of a failure in October of 2023 on a bus with 10cid compressors. At that point we reached out to Starcraft for their assistance with gaining dealer information for the 36 VINs Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23E-082 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Required parts will be shipped at no charge to the Dealer/Authorized Service Center and Trans/Air authorized up to four (4) hours of labor for the repair. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The new mounts have been designed with the front stabilizer bar in mind. They will work on any bus with or without the front stabilizer. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : When the problem was originally noticed it was believed to have only affected the mounts for 13cid and 15cid compressors. So the mount was made specifically for them. Now with this most recent issue it is determined that the 10cid compressor mounts are affected as well so engineering has made modifications and made a new mount for those compressors as well.
