) is recalling certain 2024 LR vehicles. The fasteners that connect the power steering assist cylinder to steering arm may be loose or missing.
Remedy
Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed. Dealers will inspect and tighten the steering gear fasteners and install a new cotter pin, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 15, 2023. Owners may contact Mack
customer service at 1-800-866-1177. Mack

The castle nut connecting the power steering assist cylinder to the steering arm may not have been tightened properly and the cotter pin may be missing. As a result, the nut could loosen and separate, causing a loss of steering control.
SAFETY RISK:
A loss of steering control could increase the risk of a crash.
PRECAUTIONS YOU CAN TAKE:
There are no precautions you can take other than having your vehicle repaired by a Mack
service center. Dealers will inspect, tighten the castle nut and install a new cotter pin. Recall repairs will be performed at no cost to you.
TIME REQUIRED FOR THE REPAIR:
The time required to repair your vehicle is approximately 0.5 hour.

The remedy will be to tighten the castle nut and install a new cotter pin.

Mack Trucks
has determined that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2024 LR model vehicles manufactured from August 25th, 2023, through September 19th, 2023.
The castellated nut on the power steering assist cylinder to steering arm may have insufficient torque. If the power steering assist cylinder to steering arm connection should fail in operation, there could be a loss of vehicle control which could result in a crash.
Mack Trucks
has not received any field reports, warranty claims, or customer complaints associated with this safety issue; therefore, Mack
considers this a proactive measure to protect the public and Mack
’s customers from the potential risk associated with this defect.
To ensure that these vehicles meet Mack
’s rigorous quality requirements, follow the instructions outlined below to inspect the castle nut, re-torque, and install new cotter pin.

Repair Instructions
1. Secure vehicle for service by parking on a flat and level surface.
2. Apply parking brake.
3. Place the transmission in neutral or park.
4. Install the wheel chocks.
5. Disconnect the battery from the negative terminal.
6. Turn the steering wheel so that the wheels point straight ahead.
7. Locate the castle nut on the power steering assist cylinder connected to the steering arm on the right side of the vehicle.
8. Torque tighten the castle nut to specified torque.
Tightening Torque
238-264 Nm (176-195 lb-ft)
9. Install the new cotter pin.
10. Connect the cable to the negative terminal.
11. Remove the wheel chocks.
12. Return vehicle to service.

Product Safety Office receives a report of a potential issue in our factory with a critical joint and a formal investigation is opened.
October 16, 2023 Findings from the investigation are reviewed by the Product Safety Evaluation Committee and the recommendation is that this is be brought to Product Safety Committee as a potential product safety defect.
October 19, 2023 the Product Safety Committee meets and decides that a product safety defect exists.
October 24, 2023 Mack
submits 573 and advises that a voluntary safety recall will be performed.
There have been no accidents or injuries related to this issue, there have been no warranty claims, field reports or customer complaints associated with this issue.

Description On a small number of trucks, the castle nut connecting the power steering assist cylinder to the steering arm may not have been tightened properly and the cotter pin may be missing. As a result, the nut could loosen and separate, causing a loss of steering control. Owners will be notified and instructed to not drive their vehicles until recall repairs have been completed. There have been no field reports, warranty claims or customer complaints associated with this issue. The remedy will be to tighten the castle nut and install a new cotter pin. Product Safety Office receives a report of a potential issue in our factory with a critical joint and a formal investigation is opened. October 16, 2023 Findings from the investigation are reviewed by the Product Safety Evaluation Committee and the recommendation is that this is be brought to Product Safety Committee as a potential product safety defect. October 19, 2023 the Product Safety Committee meets and decides that a product safety defect exists. October 24, 2023 Mack
