) is recalling certain 2024 MD trucks. The steering wheel attachment bolt may loosen and separate from the steering shaft, causing the steering wheel to detach.
Remedy
Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed. Dealers will replace the steering wheel retention bolt, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 20, 2023. Owners may contact Mack

Description
The steering wheel attachment bolt may loosen and could separate from the steering shaft, resulting in a loose or detached steering wheel. If in operation, there could be a loss of control of the vehicle which could result in a crash. Owners will be notified and instructed to not drive their vehicles until recall repairs have been completed.
There have been no field reports, warranty claims or customer complaints associated with this issue.
The remedy will be to replace the steering wheel retention bolt and tighten to specification.

- The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act require dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.
- Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.

Mack
has determined that certain model year 2024 Mack
Medium Duty (“MMD”) chassis, were manufactured with a possible under or over torque condition on the steering wheel mounting hardware.
The steering wheel mounting fastener may not be torqued to specification. The improperly torqued fastener could result in a loss of clamp load on the steering wheel to steering shaft causing excessive play/looseness in the steering wheel.
To ensure that these vehicles meet Mack
’s stringent quality requirements, replacement and torque of the affected fastener will be required.

Repair Instructions
1. Secure vehicle for service by parking on a level surface.
2. Apply parking brake.
3. Place the transmission in neutral or park.
4. Install wheel chocks.
5. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal.
6. Turn the steering wheel so that the wheels point straight ahead.
7. Remove the horn button.
8. Disconnect the connector.
9. Remove the screw.
Important Note
Discard the screw
10. Install new steering wheel mounting screw 82735908.
11. Torque steering wheel screw.
Tightening Torque
Steering wheel, screw 85 ± 5Nm (63 ± 4 lb-ft.)
12. Connect the connector.
13. Install the horn button.
14. Connect the cable to the negative terminal.
15. Remove the wheel chocks.
16. Release the vehicle to the customer.

Product Safety Office receives a report of a potential issue in our factory with a critical joint (torque control) and a formal investigation is opened.
October 17, 2023 Findings from the investigation are reviewed by the Product Safety Evaluation Committee and the recommendation is that this is be brought to Product Safety Committee as a potential product safety defect.
November 2, 2023 The Product Safety Committee meets and decides that a product safety defect exists.
November 7, 2023 573 Report filed with NHTSA
