Summary
Motor Coach Industries
(MCI
) is recalling certain 2014-2018 D4000, 2013-2019 D4005, 2013-2023 D4500, 2013-2020 D4505, and 2021-2024 D45CRTLE coaches equipped with a Ricon wheelchair lift. The red beacon lighting on the Threshold Warning System (TWS) may not be bright enough. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 403, “Platform Lift Systems.”
Remedy
MCI
will work with Ricon to replace the TWS kits, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 29, 2024. Owners may contact MCI
customer service at 1-800-241-2947.

received a recall notice from Ricon 23E091 regarding the threshold warning lamp being noncompliant to FMVSS 403. Over the next several days, MCI
confirmed the use of the suspect lamp assembly (Ricon PN 32885, MCI
PN 07-07-1208) on multiple coaches.
The issue was brought to the Vehicle Safety Committee on 31-Janauary-2024 and consensus was reached to issue a recall, culminating in this 573 filing.

Description of the Cause : Threshold Warning System Kit PN RI32885 contains two red beacons. Each beacon is configured with two incandescent bulbs. Ricon has determined that the wattage rating of the bulbs is not sufficient to produce the minimum light intensity of 20 candela specified in FMVSS 403, section S6.1.4. Identification of Any Warning

Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : MCI
will work with customers and Ricon Corporation to correct the
threshold warning lights with an updated beacon, free of charge. If the customer prefers to correct the issue, they can request the lights through Ricon or MCI
, and they can submit a warranty claim for labor through the normal Ricon system, per Ricon’s letter to MCI
. The remedy is expected to take 30 minutes to complete. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : New Threshold Warning System Kits will incorporate a new red beacon assembly that will comply with the minimum candela requirements of S6.1.4.
MCI
stopped shipment of affected coaches on 31-January-2024, and began shipping coaches with compliant lighting on 05-February-2024. Recall Schedule :
