) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Granite vehicles. The air tanks have an insufficient volume of air for the brake system. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 121, “Air Brake Systems.”
Remedy
Dealers will add additional air tank volume, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 14, 2024. Owners may contact Mack
customer service at 1-800-866-1177. Mack

On certain vehicles, the air volume calculation for system air is 3% below the FMVSS 121 required “12 times the combined volume of all service brake chambers”. The risk is a vehicle crash that may result in personal injury.
Vehicles will be recalled and additional air tank volume will be added to meet FMVSS 121 requirements..

Dealer Responsibilities
- The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act require dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.
- Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.

has not received warranty claims, field reports, or service reports because of this issue.
To ensure that these vehicles meet Mack
’s stringent quality requirements, follow the instructions outlined below to add an additional air tank to increase overall volume and meet FMVSS 121 requirements.

Repair Instructions
1. Park the vehicle on level surface.
2. Apply the parking brake.
3. The retrofit air tank will be installed on the right-hand side of the truck on the frame.
4. Begin by drilling four 15.5mm holes in the frame to mount the air tank brackets. Use the measurements below.
5. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal.
6. The retrofit air tank will be installed on the right-hand side of the truck on the frame.
7. Begin by drilling four 15.5mm holes in the frame to mount the air tank brackets. Use the measurements below.
8. Ensure the plug, swivel, and elbow fitting have been installed on the tank prior to mounting it to the frame.
9. Once drilled, install the brackets, air tank, and straps to the frame using appropriate hardware.
10. Once installed, connect the airline from the lower tank to underframe tank on right-hand side.
11. Route the 3/8” airline from rack lower air tank to under frame tank. Airline can be clipped on airline bundle on the transmission crossmember.
12. Once installation is completed, check system for any leaks.
13. Reconnect cable to negative terminal.
14. Remove wheel chocks.
15. Return vehicle to service.
Chronology :
February 7, 2024 Product Safety is informed of a potential issue with air volume calculations in certain vehicles and an investigation is opened.
February 14, 2024 Results of the investigation are presented to the Product Safety Committee which determines that a product noncompliance to FMVSS 121 exists.
February 19, 2024 DIR Filed with NHTSA.
There have been no accidents or injuries related to this issue, there have been no warranty claims, field reports or customer complaints associated with this issue.

There are no precautions you can take other than having your vehicle repaired
by a Mack
service center. Vehicles will be inspected and additional air tank
volume will be added to meet FMVSS 121 requirements. Recall repairs will be
performed at no cost to you.
The time required to repair your vehicle is approximately 4 hours.
