Summary
Bendix
Commercial Vehicle Systems, LLC (Bendix
) is recalling certain Intellipark Park Valve Modules (PVM) with part numbers, K266604R000, K189349, K273523R000 and, K273520R000. The rubber ball seal in the PVM may fracture and cause a leak, which can result in park brake failure or unexpected park brake engagement while driving.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the Intellipark PVM, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 27, 2024. Owners may contact Bendix
customer service at 1-800-247-2725.

11/23/2023: Quality alert issued on assembly line for visual inspection during ball seal installation process. Product engineering investigation opened to determine performance impact of a torn ball seal. No malfunction observed even on parts with a small tear in the ball seal.
12/20/2023 – Combined environmental (temperature, humidity, vibration, and valve cycling) accelerated test started on ball seals with visual cracks.
1/6/2024 – Initial data of combined environmental test sample progressed from a small tear to a fracture. Bendix
product safety risk assessment (RA) team formed.
1/8/2024 – Supplier B provided improved ball seals produced by an improved process with no cracks, and resistance to tearing durring the press operation. Customers notified of quality concern. Quality containment put in place.
1/9/2024 – 2/14/2024 Continued engineering evaluation. Combined environmental accelerated testing of PVM with improved ball seal from suppler B.
2/23/2024 – Extended durability testing of PVM.
3/20/2024 – Extended durability testing results collected. Improved ball seals sourced from supplier B were found to exhibit excessive leakage.
3/12/2024 – Bendix
assembly plant stopped using ball seals from supplier B, reinitiated use of ball seals from supplier A.
3/14/2024 – 4/23/2024: RA team continues testing and analysis and prepares a recommendation.
4/23/2024 – Monitoring of warranty and field complaints affirmed no claims related to a cracked or leaking ball seals.
4/24/2024 – Bendix
Product Integrity Committee determines that an equipment safety defect exists for PVM’s assembled with ball seals from supplier B.

Production Dates : SEP 20, 2023 – MAR 12, 2024 Description of Defect :
Description of the Defect : The Intellipark Park Valve Module (PVM) may develop an excessive leak that leads to improper park brake operation.
FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR
Description of the Safety Risk : A park valve module with fractured rubber ball seal may result in an inability to park when commanded. The vehicle must be parked by depleting the air supply to engage the parking brake by fanning down the system using the service brake pedal. If a driver does not detect that the park valve module is malfunctioning, the vehicle may unintentionally move which increases the likelihood of a crash. A fractured rubber ball seat may also leak in a way such that the parking brake system engages without a command. If the vehicle is in motion, an un-commanded parking brake engagement may increase the likelihood of a crash.
Description of the Cause : An improperly molded rubber ball seal may contain a crack that may tear during assembly, and propagate to a fracture after repeated actuation and environmental exposure. The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 24E-034 Page 3 Identification of Any Warning
that can Occur : Parking brake status is provided to driver by LED lights on the parking brake control switch and indicated by dashboard telltale light or other audible and visual dash display messages. Audible exhaust sounds that are typically heard as an air braked vehicle is parked may not be heard. The excessive leak may be heard during pre-trip inspection before the vehicle is put in use. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production :
The defective ball seal may contain cracks and molding defects from supplier B. The remedy ball seals do not contain cracks and are from supplier A. Each Park Valve Module has a serialized date code which can be used to identify PVM’s with potentially defective ball seals.
Remedy ball seals were obtained from supplier A which exhibit no cracks and were tested for durability in repeated cycling and environmental exposure without failures. The supplier A ball seals were re-introduced to assemblies produced on 3/14/2024. No Intellipark PVM were built after 3/14/2024 with ball seals from supplier B that contain the potential defect.
