Summary
Braun Ambulances (Braun Ambulances) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Chief XL I, Chief XL III, Express Plus I, Express III, and Liberty I vehicles. In the event of a short circuit or wiring failure, the firmware in the node may fail to shut off the output pin, resulting in overloaded electrical circuits.
Remedy
Dealers will update the firmware, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 8, 2024. Owners may contact Braun Ambulances customer service at 1-877-344-9990. Braun Ambulances number for this recall is 24-003.

Chronology :
December 2023 – January 2023: Braun experienced field issues with Weldon node 6060-2010-00 and firmware. After investigation and review, the decision was made to replace the high content nodes in the field in February 2024. This required a firmware update coupled with replacing nodes. These nodes were produced and installed in the same time frame called out in Weldon recall 24E-006. Braun issued recall 24V-082 to address the reported field failure concerns with the nodes and firmware in question. The recall remedy included replacing the 6060-2010-00 node with a 6060-2010-01 and installation of updated firmware. Braun was contacted by NHTSA regarding filing a separate recall corresponding to Weldon recall 24E-006 in April 2024. Both recalls from Braun and Weldon have the same remedy but were called out as addressing different issues. Braun reviewed the recall and made the decision on April 29th, 2024 to file an additional recall regarding Weldon recall 24E-006 due to the nature of the potential failures, increased risk of heat related damage and fire. The recall will remedy the known field issues and proactively address in the vehicles with this revision node that have not experienced an of reported issues. 29 total vehicles are impacted. This recall population consists of the same vehicles in Braun recall 24V-082.

Description of the Defect : Braun Industries has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Type I and Type III Chief XL, Express, Express Plus, and Liberty vehicles produced from November 2023 through January 2024. In these vehicles, Hercules High Content 1.7 Nodes and associated firmware produced by Weldon may not shut off the output pin if there is a short circuit in the vehicle wiring or other devices installed on the vehicle. If the electrical circuits become overloaded, depending on how the node is wired into the vehicle, including whether the wiring is located near a fuel source, there is an increased risk of heat related damage or fire.

Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production :
The recall condition and rememdy was corrected in production in February 2024. Once the issue was identified all vehicles were quarantined until the latest firmware was updated in finished vehicles and all new vehicels produced starting in February 2024 had the latest firmware installed.
