Descriptive Information : Certain left and/or right-side roof-rail airbag (“RRAB”) inflators manufactured by certain Autoliv Group companies between November 26, 2013 and July 9, 2014 may contain a manufacturing defect at the weld joint that could result in partial inflation of the RRAB. The recall population was determined based on a review of production records; 7254 potential RRABs involved (this includes foreign volumes). Description of the Defect : Certain RRAB inflators, located on the roof rails above the headliner, may contain a manufacturing defect in chambers from a certain chamber supplier that may result in failure at the inflator weld joint.

Description of the Safety Risk : If the RRAB inflator ruptures at the weld joint, compressed gas will escape
and cause a partial inflation of the RRAB where one or more sections of the inflator may enter or exit the vehicle. This may potentially cause injury if a person is in or around the vehicle during the event.

On September 20, 2023, GM filed a Part 573 Report regarding a potential defect in the weld joint of an airbag inflator supplied by an Autoliv Group entity in 9,264 vehicles.
On December 21, 2023, GM expanded its recall to include three field-event lots (20,712 vehicles).
On April 24, 2024, BMW filed a Part 573 Report regarding a potential defect in airbag inflators supplied by a different Autoliv Group entity (5,761 vehicles).

same inflator chamber part number, the RRABs have physically different designs, including inflator length, tank volume, and pyro mass. The in-vehicle mounting methods and environment are also unique to each OEM. The BMW RRAB has no known field separations or ruptures. The RRABs are also manufactured by different Autoliv Group entities.
Autoliv is providing this information report in accordance with 49 CFR Part 573.3(f) based upon the defect information reports submitted by GM and BMW. See NHTSA Recalls 23V-674, 23V-870, and 24V-288.
