Fuel Filter Hoses May Disconnect and Leak Fuel
A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire. Additionally, a lack of fuel can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

) is recalling certain Cummins
L9
diesel engines with part number D563027BX03. The remote fuel filter hoses may become separated from the fitting, which can result in a fuel leak and a lack of fuel supply to the engine.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the fuel filter hoses, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed in July 2024. Owners may contact Cummins
customer service at 1-800-286-6467. Cummins

3/27/2024 – Cummins
was informed of fuel leaks on the subject hoses during vehicle production by an OEM (Nova Bus
).
3/27/2024 – 4/9/2024 – Cummins
requested the failed parts from the OEM for failure analysis. Cummins
initiated and completed an investigation into the cause of the leaks. A preliminary fault tree analysis identified insufficient crimping of the hose fitting as the most likely cause of leaks.
4/10/2024 – 4/29/2024 – Cummins
continued to investigate the issue and determined that the cause of the fuel leaks was insufficient crimping of the connector.
4/29/24 – 5/1/24 – Cummins
conducted a product safety investigation. A warranty search identified 15 warranty claims with failure dates between 6/9/2023 and 4/17/2024 for fuel leaks involving engines equipped with these options. Cummins
conducted a Product Safety Hazard Analysis to evaluate the potential safety risk on fielded units.
05/7/2024 -5/14/2024 – Cummins
escalated the issue through its Product Safety Defect Determination Process.
5/14/2024 – Based upon the results of the investigation, the Cummins
Product Safety Defect Board decided to conduct a safety campaign to address this condition. To date, there have been no reports of fires, accidents or injuries related to this issue.

Descriptive Information : This recall covers certain Cummins
L9
engines equipped with a remote Stage 2 fuel filter (Option Numbers FF90943 and FF90944), which includes two pressurized fuel hoses. The recall consists of the entire population of the engines built between the identified production dates that were equipped with certain fuel hose part numbers. The subject engines were sold to various OEMs for installation in Transit Buses and Recreational Vehicles. The production “Begin” and “End” dates provided herein are based on the dates listed on the affected engines’ dataplates (the engine “build date”).

Description of the Defect : The remote fuel filter hoses installed on the subject engines can become separated from the fuel fitting resulting in fuel leaks and lack of fuel supply to the engine.

increasing the risk of a crash. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of a fire.

Description of Remedy Program : The remedy is to replace the two subject fuel hoses with hoses having
improved connector crimps. Cummins
requests that it be exempt from providing notification of a reimbursement plan. Any pre-notification product failure would have been corrected under the manufacturer’s limited warranty. Accordingly, no person would be eligible for reimbursement pursuant to 573.13. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The remedy component has an improved crimp and different date codes. Remedy hoses will have a date code of 230310 (YYMMDD format) and later.
The condition was corrected in production on 4/1/23 with the introduction of an improved hose design with an increased crimp on the connector joint. Recall Schedule :
Description of Recall Schedule : Cummins
expects to notify the affected OEMs by 5/24/2024. Pending
consultation and agreement with the affected OEMs, Cummins
will conduct the recall, including sending owner notifications. The timing of owner notification will be determined in consultation with the OEMs.
Cummins
expects to release a safety campaign by July 11, 2024. In any event, Cummins
expects to notify owners no later than 7/21/2024, pending availability of owner addresses from the OEMs.
