Summary
BYD Coach & Bus (BYD) is recalling certain 2019-2023 BYD RIDE C10M, K7M, K8M, K9M, K9S, K9MD, and K11M transit buses. The rearview mirror control switch module may have been manufactured with an incorrect fuse.
Remedy
BYD will replace the fuse in the mirror control switch module with a 1-AMP fuse, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 10, 2024. Owners may contact BYD customer service at 1-661-940-3250.

Chronology :
1. On 2/2/2024, a BYD/RIDE customer reported malfunctioning external rear-view mirror switches on three buses including overheating at the mirror switch base. BYD/RIDE identified the issue as related to Safe Fleet mirror switches and notified Safe Fleet. On 2/7/2024, BYD/RIDE shipped two of the customer’s switches to Safe Fleet and requested it conduct a failure cause analysis.
2. From 2/6/2024 to 2/14/2024, four additional cases of external rear-view mirror switch malfunctions were reported to BYD/RIDE. No further malfunctions of the same or similar type have been reported since.
3. On 2/29/2024, Safe Fleet informed BYD/RIDE that the technical solution to prevent similar failures was to replace the 5A fuse in the switches with a 1A fuse.
4. On 3/1/2024, BYD/RIDE confirmed that its bus design was not the cause of the switch failures and informed Safe Fleet of its findings, providing the bus side mirror and switch diagrams to substantiate its conclusion.
5. On 4/3/2024, NHTSA informed BYD/RIDE that bus manufacturer Gillig LLC had filed recall 23V-812, indicating a safety defect in certain 2021-2023 Gillig Low Floor buses using the same mirror control switch module from Safe Fleet. BYD/RIDE then investigated whether it used the same switch module and conducted a warranty analysis, concluding that it did use the same module indicated in the Gillig recall but BYD had not observed instances of heavy smoke as reported by Gillig.
6. On 5/20/2024, BYD/RIDE decided to file a safety recall to address the potentially affected vehicle population. While BYD/RIDE does not definitively know if the same underlying issue reported by Gillig applies to its vehicles, the company is taking this step in an abundance of caution.

Description of the Defect : The fuse rating of the mirror control switch module may be inadequate to
ensure appropriate protection against overheating. As a result, BYD/RIDE has
decided to voluntarily initiate a safety recall campaign for the vehicle
population that may be affected by the issue.

Description of Remedy Program : All vehicle owners involved will be notified of the recall, and all affected
vehicles will be corrected at no cost to the customer by replacing the
current 5AMP fuse in the mirror control switch module with a 1AMP fuse.
BYD/RIDE will cover all costs incurred by the customers for any
prenotification repair in accordance with the recall reimbursement plan
on file with NHTSA.
How Remedy Component Differs
from Recalled Component :
The remedy component consists of a modified switch that incorporates a
1AMP protection fuse.

BYD\RIDE implemented factory containment on 5/2/2024, any vehicle
delivery after this date is not affected by this issue.
