Summary
VinFast Auto, LLC (VinFast) is recalling certain 2022-2024 VF8 vehicles. Inactive ignitors may have been installed in the air bags.
Remedy
VinFast will replace the air bags, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 7, 2024. Owners may contact VinFast customer service at 1-833-503-0600. VinFast’s number for this recall is VPAC-291.

Chronology :
On April 19, 2024, a VinFast vehicle was brought to a dealer in Vietnam due to the airbag warning light remaining active. The dealer traced the concern to the front passenger side airbag. Further investigation determined the front passenger side airbag was equipped with an inert airbag ignitor. Inert airbags are fitted to pre-production vehicles only to ensure the safety of Engineers during the final development testing. They are not designed to be equipped on production level vehicles. A formal investigation was immediately undertaken. On May 22, 2024, following the conclusion of its investigation, VinFast determined the existence of an unreasonable risk to safety that could exist under a unique crash scenario and authorized a voluntarily safety recall. There have been no vehicle accidents, injuries or deaths involving the implicated vehicle population.

Description of Remedy Program : VinFast immediately issued a stop-ship and stop-sale globally for the
affected VF8 vehicles. In the U.S., VinFast is initiating a voluntary safety recall of the affected U.S. population of 284 vehicles, 52 of which are in customers hands. VinFast or its dealer will replace all affected airbags. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy component is an airbag equipped with an active ignitor.
