Dana
Incorporated (Dana
) is recalling certain D-Series and E-Series Steer Axles, and replacement tie rod assemblies for Dana
D-Series and E-Series Steer Axles. The tie rod assemblies in these steer axles contain ball studs that may have been incorrectly heat-treated, which can cause them to break, and possibly result in tie rod failure.
Remedy
Dana
will inspect and replace the ball studs as necessary, free of charge. Dana
will notify original equipment manufacturers and distributors on June 24, 2024. Owners may contact Dana
customer service at 1-419-887-3000.

On or about May 24, 2024, the ball stud supplier notified Dana
’s Mexican manufacturing facility that an experimental batch of ball studs was not segregated properly and a portion of it was mixed with regular production, including in batches supplied to Dana
.
Dana
promptly initiated an investigation to determine the customers, if any, to which Dana
supplied steer arms that incorporated the experimental ball studs. Dana
also promptly initiated an engineering investigation to assess the performance of ball studs from normal and experimental production.
On or about June 4, 2024, Dana
convened its Safety Committee to review preliminary results of its engineering investigation. On June 5, 2024, based upon additional results, the Safety Committee decided to make this report in an abundance of caution.

assemblies, and to replace any experimental ball studs that were not intended for production. Customers who paid for a pre-notification remedy will be eligible for reimbursement in accordance with Dana
’s forthcoming reimbursement plan. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The recalled components were experimental parts manufactured utilizing an unapproved heat treat process that the supplier inadvertently introduced into production. The remedy components will be produced to intended specification. The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 24E-048 Page 3 Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The recall condition does not exist in production.
