Descriptive Information : The potential concern relates to the ball studs used in tie rod assemblies that are incorporated into certain steer axles supplied as original equipment to certain commercial vehicle manufacturers, and as replacement equipment.

Description of Defect :
Description of the Defect : Certain ball studs supplied to Dana by a third-party supplier, USK International, and which Dana incorporated into certain steer axles and replacement tie rod assemblies, did not meet case hardening specifications, and there is a risk that the ball studs could be more brittle than intended.

On or about May 24, 2024, the ball stud supplier notified Dana’s Mexican manufacturing facility that an experimental batch of ball studs was not segregated properly and a portion of it was mixed with regular production, including in batches supplied to Dana.
Dana promptly initiated an investigation to determine the customers, if any, to which Dana supplied steer arms that incorporated the experimental ball studs. Dana also promptly initiated an engineering investigation to assess the performance of ball studs from normal and experimental production.
On or about June 4, 2024, Dana convened its Safety Committee to review preliminary results of its engineering investigation. On June 5, 2024, based upon additional results, the Safety Committee decided to make this report in an abundance of caution. Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : Dana intends to inspect the ball studs incorporated into the tie rod
assemblies, and to replace any experimental ball studs that were not intended for production. Customers who paid for a pre-notification remedy will be eligible for reimbursement in accordance with Dana’s forthcoming reimbursement plan. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The recalled components were experimental parts manufactured utilizing an unapproved heat treat process that the supplier inadvertently introduced into production. The remedy components will be produced to intended specification. The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 24E-048 Page 3 Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The recall condition does not exist in production. The supplier inadvertently introduced experimental ball studs from an unapproved heat treat process into production assemblies. Dana understands that the supplier is initiating an internal review to implement corrective actions and avoid reoccurrence when handling experimental materials and processes. Recall Schedule :
Description of Recall Schedule : As Dana supplied its steer arms to commercial customers (OEMs), Dana
will notify its commercial OEM customers directly. Dana anticipates that the OEMs will notify and conduct the recall. Dana will notify the parts distribution centers and dealers to which it supplied replacement assemblies directly, and will seek their support in notifying end-users.
