Summary

Triumph Motorcycles America, LTD (Triumph) is recalling certain 2016-2019 Bonneville T120 and Bonneville T120 Black, 2017-2019 Bonneville T100 and T100 Black, 2017-2018 Street Cup and Street Scrambler, and 2016-2018 Street Twin motorcycles. The clutch cable may contact the main harness cover and cause damage to wiring within the main harness. This may lead to a loss of electrical power to various electrical circuits.

 

Remedy

Triumph will notify owners, and dealers will replace the original securing guide for the clutch cable and main harness with an updated one, free of charge. The recall began March 27, 2019. Owners may contact Triumph customer service at 1-678-854-2010. Triumph’s number for this recall is SRAN560.

Background Information

The headstock tidy has been refined to allow the main harness and clutch cable to locate in a more natural position during operation and avoid the possibility of the clutch cable damaging the main harness.

Dealers are requested to replace the headstock tidy and it’s fixings as described in the procedure below.

Delivering a motorcycle subject to an outstanding Safety Recall Action Notice may contravene local or national laws in your market, territory or country.

 

Triumph subsidiaries and distributors must instigate a Safety Recall Action in their country in accordance with the national recall code of practice. For vehicles in dealer stock, the safety recall MUST be actioned before delivery to the customer.

Dealers are to prioritise repair of customer owned motorcycles before any unsold motorcycles.

Parts Ordering Instructions

For Triumph Subsidiary and Overseas Distributor dealers using Triumph Warranty On-Line with Parts Auto Ordering Flag switched on: Order all repair parts by submitting a New Prior through the Warranty OnLine system. Entering the above repair code in a New Prior will automatically add the parts required and labour times for this Service Bulletin.

For Overseas Distributor dealers NOT using Triumph Warranty On-Line or for Overseas Distributor dealers using Triumph Warranty On-Line with Parts Auto Ordering Flag switched off: Orders should be placed using the normal parts ordering procedure.

 

Genuine Parts Return

Dealer to retain parts for 90 days. All parts must be stored in a secure, non-public accessed area and correctly identified with a completed warranty label. Thereafter the parts must be rendered unusable prior to scrapping.

 

Other Instructions

Once completed, please mark the Service Record Book that the requirements of this Safety Recall Action Notice have been complied with.

Before returning the motorcycle to the customer, download the latest calibration to the engine control module using the current version of the Triumph diagnostic software.

Warning

Before starting work, ensure the motorcycle is stabilised and adequately supported. This will help prevent it from falling and causing injury to the operator or damage to the motorcycle.

 

Removal – All Models

1. Remove the seat as described in the Service Manual.
2. Disconnect the battery as described in the Service Manual.
3. Release the lock nut and retain as described in the Genuine Parts Return section, remove the bolt and detach the fuel tank from the rear fixing.

Note:

• Use a suitable heavy cloth or tape (such as masking tape) to protect the frame and fuel tank.

4. Slide the fuel tank rearwards approximately 25 mm to gain access to the headstock tidy fixings.
5. Remove the headstock tidy fixings and then remove the headstock tidy, retain the parts as described in the Genuine Parts Return section.

 

Installation – Bonneville T100, Bonneville T100 Black, Bonneville T120, Bonneville T120 Black

Note:

• The brake line grommet must be fitted with the raised rear edge aligned with the rear of the headstock tidy as shown in the illustration below.

1. Position the clutch cable, brake line and main wiring harness in their respective positions on the headstock tidy, position it to the frame with the raised edge of the brake line grommet visible to the front of the headstock tidy as shown below.
2. Tighten the new fixings to 1.5 Nm.
3. With the aid of an assistant, turn the handlebars lock to lock, making sure there is no hard contact between the clutch cable, main harness and brake line. Make sure the main harness is free to move.
4. Reposition the fuel tank to it’s original position and remove any protective measures used during removal.
5. Refit the rear fuel tank mounting retaining bolt.
6. Fit a new locknut from the kit, counterhold the bolt and tighten to 8 Nm.
7. Reconnect the battery as described in the Service Manual.
8. Start the engine.
9. With the engine running, turn the handlebars lock to lock, and check that the headlight, direction indicators, rear lights and brake lights operate in all positions, and that the engine continues to idle.
10. Refit the seat as described in the Service Manual.

 

Installation – Street Twin, Street Twin A2 Licence Version, Street Cup and Street Scrambler

Note:

• The brake line grommet must be fitted with the raised front edge aligned with the front of the headstock tidy as shown in the illustration below.

1. Position the clutch cable, brake line and main wiring harness in their respective positions on the headstock tidy, position it to the frame with the raised edge of the brake line grommet visible to the front of the headstock tidy as shown below.
2. Tighten the new fixings to 1.5 Nm.
3. With the aid of an assistant, turn the handlebars lock to lock, making sure there is no hard contact between the clutch cable, main harness and brake line. Make sure the main harness is free to move.
4. Reposition the fuel tank to it’s original position and remove any protective measures used during removal.

Triumph Motorcycles has initiated a voluntary safety recall affecting the specific models and VIN ranges listed below. Safety Recall Action Notice 560 requires your immediate attention to rectify the following motorcycles:

What is the Issue?

The headstock tidy situated behind the head stock on the left-hand side of the main frame is used to position the clutch cable and main harness, which in its original condition may allow the clutch cable to contact the main harness sheath and may damage wiring within the main harness leading to a loss of electrical power to various electrical circuits.  As a consequence lighting may malfunction or engine power could be lost without warning.  In all cases, there is an increased risk of a crash.

 

What Will Triumph Do?

To address this condition, Triumph is issuing a new headstock tidy as described in the attached Safety Recall Action Notice 560. Notification letters to current customers will be mailed beginning March 13, 2019 explaining the action and advising them to return their bike to a Triumph dealer to have the modification carried out free-of-charge to the owner.

 

What Should You Do?

All affected motorcycles are to be repaired in accordance with Safety Recall Action Notice 560. It is imperative that any owner having recently purchased an affected machine be contacted by you immediately and asked to return the machine for modification. Triumph Dealers should take the following actions:

You must quarantine all unsold stock and arrange modification as per Safety Recall Action Notice 560 prior to any further deliveries to customers. You can check those machines in your unsold stock that require modification by using TriumphOnline.net. Do this by undertaking the following simple steps:

1. Once signed into the site, select Motor Cycle Sales and then Stock Management (this will provide you a display summary of your unsold machines by model).
2. Select the affected model to view the individual VIN details of your unsold machines. We strongly recommend you check this listing against your physical stock and advise us of any discrepancies. Machines containing a symbol of a ‘spanner’ (indicating Bulletin or Safety Recall Action Notice outstanding) will require attention. Select the VIN to open a dialogue window. Details of all outstanding bulletin(s) and Safety Recall Action Notices are contained in the bottom half of the screen. To view the bulletin content, click on the Union Jack “flag” to open an English language PDF document or alternative flags for other language options (when available). This can be read and/or printed off as required.

• In an effort to guarantee no shortages within the dealer network, orders will only be fulfilled following the normal warranty process. Please do not order extra stock for your inventory.
• Owners of machines outside of the affected VIN range are not connected with this action and may therefore require reassurance.
• Some VINs affected by this Safety Recall Action Notice may also require other bulletin or Safety Recall Action Notice work to be carried out. Please use the above-described system tools to identify all outstanding bulletins or notices and make arrangements to carry out these repairs at the same time.
• Read, download and circulate the above-mentioned Safety Recall Action Notice to relevant staff and ensure all Sales and Service staff are aware of this action.
• This action is likely to increase visitor traffic to your showroom and service areas. Please ensure all arrangements are made to best accommodate them.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Triumph Motorcycles Ltd. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in your motorcycle, with the VIN shown above.  Triumph is conducting a safety recall to address the condition.

 

The reason for this recall notice:	The clutch cable may contact the main harness sheath and cause damage to wiring within the main harness. If this condition occurs and remains undetected, it may lead to a loss of electrical power to various electrical circuits. As a consequence, the headlight or indicator lighting may malfunction, or the engine could stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
What Triumph Motorcycles Ltd & your dealer will do:	Triumph Motorcycles Ltd has authorized your dealer to replace the original securing guide for the clutch cable and main harness, called a headstock tidy, free of charge to you including parts and labour.  This repair should take less than 30 minutes. However, depending upon the dealer’s work schedule, it may be necessary to make your motorcycle available for a longer period of time.
What you must do to ensure your safety:	Please make an appointment with your authorized Triumph motorcycles dealer to have this important remedy performed on your motorcycle as soon as possible.   Federal regulations require that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within 10 days.
If you need help:	Please contact your authorized Triumph dealer should you have any questions or encounter any difficulty regarding this recall. In the event your dealer is unable to remedy your motorcycle, please contact Triumph Motorcycles America at 1-678-854-2010.
