Summary
Hercules Enterprises is recalling certain 2018 Hercules CH40GN 18047 trailers. The wheel end nut locking device on these trailers may not be properly installed, allowing the wheel end to separate from the axle.
Remedy
According to Hercules Enterprises, all of the affected axles have been repaired. The recall began September 6, 2018. Owners may contact Hercules Enterprises customer service at 1-908-369-0000.

NHTSA is missing critical, required information for this safety recall. This information must be supplied through the NHTSA Recalls Portal within 5 working days of confirming its accuracy:

– A statement that the defect or noncompliance can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning; or a description of whatever prior warning may occur, and a statement that if this warning is not heeded, a vehicle crash can occur (49 CFR 577.5 (f)(1)).
– A description of the manufacturer’s program for remedying the defect or noncompliance (49 CFR 573.6 (c)(8)(i)).

Hercules Enterprises have been notified by AXN (notification letter attached) about possible error of the Stemco Pro Torq spindle nut installation on axles which was used on recent DCLI chassis production. Attaching possibly affected chassis unit numbers and VIN numbers. We are obligated to advise you that selling or leasing these chassis with potentially affected axles before they have been inspected, cleared, and remedied if necessary, could be a violation of federal law.

Dear Simas,
AXN Heavy Duty has determined that we have had a possible error in the installation of the Stemco “Pro Torq” spindle nut on axles that where assembled for Hercules between January 1, 2018 and July 28, 2018. As such, this letter serves as a safety inspection and/or recall notice for the axles described below.
The potential defect is that the locking tab was either not installed or not fully engaged in the locking mechanism of the spindle nut. This error could result in a possible wheel off occurrence. We are providing Hercules Enterprises with the list of axle serial numbers that we believe could be affected. We are asking Hercules Enterprises to locate and examine internally or to locate the end customer and have the “Pro Torq” nut inspected to ensure proper installation. We have attached the procedures to be followed and ask that inspection sheets that we have provided be completed and a copy returned to AXN. AXN Heavy Duty will assume the financial responsibility to have the scope of axles inspected and corrected where necessary.
We are obligated to advise you that selling or leasing trailers with the potentially affected axles before they have been inspected, cleared, and remedied if necessary, could be a violation of federal law. Again, we apologize for the need to have these inspected.
