Summary
Karma Automotive (Karma) is recalling certain 2018 Karma Revero vehicles. The upper intrusion bar within the front left door may be split. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 214, “Side Impact Protection.”
Remedy
Karma will notify owners, and dealers will inspect all of the front doors and replace them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began July 1, 2019. Owners may contact Karma customer service at 1-855-288-6109. Karma’s number for this recall is RC-19-70-01.

PURPOSE: This document highlights a procedure to inspect the upper intrusion bars located inside the front vehicle doors. There is a possibility that certain vehicles may have upper intrusion bars which may exhibit a fissure, or crack, in the structure of the material. Follow the procedure outlined below to inspect both front doors for any evidence of this concern.
This document supersedes any and all previous documents in workshop manuals, wiring diagrams, training documents, parts catalog, labor operations, etc. While the method of repair is approved as indicated, performing and verifying the repair is proper is the responsibility of the technician.

New Vehicles in Dealer Inventory: It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by this notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied. By law, dealers must correct, prior to delivery for sale or lease, any vehicle that fails to comply with an applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard or that contains a defect relating to motor vehicle safety.
Pre-Owned Vehicles in Dealer Inventory: Dealers should not deliver any pre-owned vehicles in their inventory which are involved in a safety or compliance recall until the defect has been remedied.
IMPORTANT NOTICE!
A borescope kit has been shipped to each Karma authorized dealer. Please use the provided borescope kit to capture images of the concern. These images MUST be attached to the warranty claim, the TSS case, and retained with the repair order.

Subject: Notification of Noncompliance Recall Campaign RC-19-70-01 – FMVSS 214 Side Impact Protection
Karma Automotive LLC (Karma) has identified a noncompliance with a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard with respect to side impact protection. Specifically, FMVSS/CMVSS 214 specifies crush resistance requirements based on deflections of the side doors under specified loading conditions.
The remedy is to inspect all front doors. If any front doors are found with the discrepancies, the technician at the Karma authorized repair center will replace the affected door(s). Registered owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted with a notification by mail in July 2019, in which they will be asked to take their vehicle to a Karma authorized repair center where the remedy will be provided free of charge.
On or before July 12, 2019, vehicle owners will be notified with a notification recall letter.

Dear Karma Owner,
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Karma Automotive LLC ( K a r m a ) has decided that certain 2018 model year Karma Revero vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 214, “Side Impact Protection.” Our records show that you are the owner of a vehicle affected by this action.
What is the issue?
In the course of routine quality inspection, it was determined that the upper intrusion bar in the front left door of certain 2018 MY Karma Revero vehicles may contain a segment of split metal and, as a result, may not be compliant with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).
In the event of a crash, if the left front door intrusion bars do not perform as designed due to a split in the metal, , there is an increased risk of injury to vehicle occupants.
What will we do?
Karma will inspect all front doors on your vehicle at a Karma authorized repair center. Any front doors found containing an affected upper intrusion bar will be replaced. Both the inspection and, if necessary, the repair will take place at a Karma authorized repair center, and will be provided free of charge. The process of inspection of the front doors will take approximately one (1) hour total. If necessary, the process of replacing the front doors of the affected vehicles will take approximately six (6) hours per door. Please contact your Karma authorized service provider for further details.
What should you do?
As always, Karma recommends that all vehicle occupants fasten their safety belts before driving and keep them fastened for the duration of the travel.

Lease vehicles and address changes

1. Remove the driver’s side door panel per the
information in the service manual (Fig. 1).
CAUTION!
• Wear disposable gloves throughout this
procedure to prevent possible damage to
interior trim components.
• To prevent damage to the vehicle, use only
non-marring, plastic, trim removal tools.

3. Identify the location of the insertion point for the
borescope by referring to Figure 3.

4. Bend the borescope tip at right angles to the
shaft, as shown in Figure 4.

7. Use the borescope camera to capture a clear image showing the condition of the upper intrusion bar in
the affected area, as shown in Figure 7. NOTE: This image MUST be attached to the warranty claim,
the TSS case, and retained with the repair order.
8. Follow steps 1~7 to perform the inspection
procedure on the front passenger door (Fig. 8).

11. Once both doors have been inspected for the
concern, reinstall all removed components by
reversing the order of removal.
12. Upon finishing vehicle reassembly, all interior
trim panels should be wiped cleaned with the
appropriate cleaning solution.
10. If the upper intrusion bar on either front door
shows no evidence of the concern (Fig.10),
proceed to step 11.
9. If signs of the concern are evident on either front
door upper intrusion bar, contact Technical Support
to open a TSS case (Fig. 9).
