Tail Light Dash Error

REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS
FIG 1:
 A tail light error may be displayed on the dash (may indicate right or left tail light) when an error is not
present.
FIG 2:
 Under the rear of the vehicle, cut wire ties holding the tail light harness on the driver side attached to the
frame rail.
 Two wire ties hold it in place.
FIG 3:
 Attach the resistor plate supplied in the kit to the driver side bottom right bolt for the rear hitch.
 Use the nut, lock washer and flat washer supplied in the kit (attach to the existing bolt).
 DO NOT remove the existing nut from the hitch bolt.
 Use the ¾” socket and ratchet and tighten the nut on the existing bolt.
FIG 4:
 Spread the harness out as shown.
 Wire connections will be made at the part of the harness between points designated A & B in the photo.
 Pull this part of the harness out of the plastic loom so the wires are accessible.

FIG 5:
 In the bundle of wires going between the resistor packs and the OEM tail light connectors, locate 2 gray
wires and 2 white wires.
 Cut the 2 gray wires half way between points A & B (shown in Fig 4).
 Cut the 2 white wires half way between points A & B (shown in Fig 4).
 There will now be 2 pairs of gray wires (Gray pair 1 & 2) and 2 pairs of white wires (White pair 1 & 2).
FIG 6:
 Strip all 8 ends of the wires (4 gray, 4 white).
 Wires should be stripped back approximately 3/8”
FIG 7:
 The resistor plate from the kit has a pair of gray wires on one end, and a pair of white wires on the other
end.
 Strip the 2 gray and 2 white wires from the resistor approximately 3/8”.
 These wires will be connected to the pairs of wires that were cut in Fig 5.
FIG 8:
 Twist one gray wire from the resistor with both wires of Gray pair 1. Crimp all 3 wires together with a
Bell cap connector from the kit.
 Twist the other gray wire from the resistor with both wires of Gray pair 2. Crimp all 3 wires together
with a Bell cap connector from kit.
 Twist one white wire from the resistor with both wires of White pair 1. Crimp all 3 wires together with a
Bell cap connector from kit.
 Twist the other white wire from the resistor with both wires of White pair 2. Crimp all 3 wires together
with a Bell cap connector from kit.

FIG 9:
 Put the wires back into the loom. The Bell cap connectors will of course not fit in the loom.
FIG 10:
 Put the harness back up on the driver side frame rail as before, and secure with 2 wire ties.
 Photo shows resistor plate attached to hitch bolt and bell cap connectors.
TEST THE EXTERIOR LIGHTS:
 Turn the ignition ON.
 Turn the headlight switch ON.
 All exterior lights (marker lights and tail lights) should illuminate.
 Turn signals should function normally without displaying any errors on the dash.
 Tap the brakes a few times and turn on the four way flashers for a few seconds – no warnings
should appear on the dash.
Turn the ignition and lights OFF.
NOTE: RESISTOR WILL GET HOT WHILE TAIL LIGHTS ARE ON. NORMAL OPERATING RANGE IS BETWEEN
160°-180°F (71°- 82°C).
