Loose Compression Fittings on Brake Treadle Valves

Summary

PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2020 Kenworth T270 and T370 vehicles. The brake treadle valves may have loose compression fittings, which can cause the air supply hose to separate from the valve.

 

Remedy

PACCAR will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake treadle valve hose connections for loose compression fittings, tightening them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began September 30, 2019. Owners may contact Kenworth customer service at 1-425-828-5888. PACCAR’s number for this recall is 19KWD.

Introduction	Kenworth Truck Company has determined that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain T270 and T370 chassis manufactured between July 19, 2019 and August 1, 2019.
Situation	144 chassis (139 U.S. and 5 Canada) T270 and T370 built from 07/19/2019 through 08/01/2019 equipped with air brakes.
Resolution	Service all chassis affected that enter your dealership, even if the customer has no issue with the chassis. Review the attached chassis list for your dealer code and schedule your customer(s) for service if their chassis is on the list. If you are not using Service Management to start repair orders, review SIR for “Complete” or “In Process” next to the “19KWD” campaign code prior to performing this repair. Follow the procedures below to inspect and tighten the compression fittings at Ports 13 and 23 of the treadle valve.
It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease new vehicles covered by this recall until the defect or noncompliance has been corrected.

 

Warranty	There is no time or mileage limit for this recall. Kenworth will pay for labor: 0.5 hours labor to inspect and torque the compression fittings. Use Quick Claim Code 19KWD. Labor

 

Procedure	Inspect the tubing at Ports 13 and 23 of the treadle valve. If the tubing slides in and out of the compression fitting, push the tubing in all the way and torque the compression fitting nut to 35 lb-ft. (47.5 N·m). If the tubing does not slide in and out of the fitting, continue with this procedure. NOTE Some chassis may have a 90° fitting instead of a straight fitting as shown in the figure below.   Remove the compression nut from the treadle valve. Confirm that the ferrule meets one of the following conditions. If it does not, the tubing and ferrule must be replaced. When replacing the tubing, follow the original routing and tubing retention/clipping. Condition 1: Slides easily on the tubing Condition 2: Has tubing extending out of the end of it. Align the tubing and ferrule with the appropriate treadle valve port, start the compression nut, push the tubing into the port while tightening the compression nut to 35 lb-ft. (47.5 N·m).

Dear Kenworth Customer,

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

 

Kenworth Truck Company has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain T270 and T370 chassis manufactured between July 19, 2019 and August 1, 2019. Certain compression fittings on the brake treadle valve may not have received appropriate torque. As a result, a brake applicaiton air supply hose may separate from the brake treadle valve, which may diminish vehicle braking capability and may increase the risk of a crash and injury without warning.

The problem is…	Certain compression fittings on the brake treadle valve may not have received appropriate torque.
What your dealer will do…	Dealers will inspect and tighten the compression fittings.
What you must do …	Contact your Kenworth Dealer to schedule an appointment for repair

 

Kenworth has initiated a recall to remedy the defect. Please contact your Kenworth dealer. To find your Kenworth dealer, please visit Dealer Locator at www.Kenworth.com. This repair may require up to 1.0 hour of labor depending on vehicle configuration and dealer scheduling. This repair will be performed at no charge to you.

If you had this repair performed before you received this letter, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall. Receipts for parts and/or labor are required for consideration of reimbursement.
