Engine Harness May Chafe and Cause Engine Stall

Summary

McLaren Automotive Incorporated (McLaren) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Senna vehicles. The engine harness may contact a metal link pipe heat shield, chafing the harness over time, potentially damaging the wires.

 

Remedy

McLaren will notify owners, and dealers will reroute the engine harness, free of charge. The recall began October 18, 2019. Owners may contact McLaren’s Client Services department at (855) 202-8815 or clientservicesna@mclaren.com.

1. Immediate Action Required

Retailers must contact customers and make service appointments as soon as reasonably practical.

Repairs are to be performed by any McLaren Authorised Retailer regardless of where the vehicle was purchased. Retailers must not refuse to repair a vehicle due to the fact that it was not purchased from their location.

2. Overview

McLaren Automotive has identified through continuous product quality monitoring, that a number of McLaren Senna vehicles may have a concern whereby the engine wiring harness can contact the neighbouring engine exhaust
heatshield. This could result in damage to the insulation sleeve on the engine wiring harness.

If the wires are damaged, there are a number of potential consequences: (1) the car could enter idle limp mode (significant engine power reduction); (2) there could be a torque limitation (slight engine power reduction); (3
) the engine could stall; or (4) if the engine is not turned off despite the existence of several warnings to the driver, unburnt fuel in the catalyst could lead to increased temperature of the catalyst, resulting in overheating. This could eventually lead to a rupture of the exhaust system, which would allow exhaust gasses to escape. Depending on the location of such a rupture, there could be damage to the vehicle.

 

3. Procedure

To carry out the required rework, replacement of an existing engine wiring harness cable tie is required. Document
SRC 15 F 002 WI (attached with this bulletin), contains the relevant work instruction and care points to ensure the
required repair is carried out to bring the vehicle up to the current manufacturing standard.

In cases where contact between the engine wiring harness and engine exhaust heatshield is present and wear to the engine harness insulation sleeve is present, please submit a Technical Request including pictures to the Technical Support team for further advice.

The total labour time is 1.85 hours.

RISK OF DAMAGE: Be careful with aesily damaged and trim

Care Point: Use protective covers to help prevent damage to paintwork

Care Point: If you see damage to the wiring harness, raise a technical request

 

 

1. Remove the bolt (1) 8 Nm and remove the airguide (2).

Care Point: Do not cause damage to the harness in the step that follows

 

2. Carefully cut and remove the cable tie (3) from the harness (4).

Care Point: The clip (5) must be used again in the subsequent steps

 

3. Turn the clip (5) to remove it from the cylinder head (6).

4. Cut the used cable tie from the clip as shown (7).

5. Assemble the new cable tie (8) – 00RL023 to the used clip (9).

6. Install new cable tie assembly into hole (10).

7. Make sure the gap between the cable tie (11) and the end of the chloroplast tape (12) is 10 -15mm.

8. Tighten the cable tie (11).

9. Make sure there is a minimum of 10mm of clearance between the harness (13) and the link pipe (14).

10. Install the components in the reverse order.

This important safety recall notice applies to your vehicle with the following Vehicle Identification Number (“VIN”):

 

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. McLaren Automotive Incorporated (“McLaren”) has decided that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year 2018-2019 McLaren Senna vehicles. According to our records, you are the owner of one of those vehicles.

 

WHAT IS THE ISSUE?

McLaren has determined that a branch of the Senna’s engine wiring harness can potentially come into contact with a metal link pipe heatshield. If there is contact, there may over time be chafing of the engine harness. If this chafing breaches the harness heatshield wrap and the harness outer sleeving, it could lead to damage to the wires contained within the engine harness bundle. If the wires are damaged, there are a number of potential consequences: (1) the car could enter idle limp mode (significant engine power reduction); (2) there could be a torque limitation (slight engine power reduction); and (3) the engine could stall, which could lead to a risk if a crash. There will be several warnings prior to any stall, including a dashboard warning light, a dashboard warning message, an audio alert signal, and a change in the vehicle’s driving characteristics.

In addition, if the engine is not turned off following these warnings, unburnt fuel in the catalyst could lead to increased temperature of the catalyst, resulting in overheating. This could eventually lead to a rupture of the exhaust system, which would allow exhaust gasses to escape.  Depending on the location of such a rupture, there could be damage to the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

 

WHAT MCLAREN  WILL DO 

To remedy this problem, your McLaren dealer will re-route the wiring harness to assure that it will not come into contact with the heatshield. This will be performed at no cost to you.

 

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

At your earliest convenience, please call your McLaren dealer to schedule an appointment to have the remedy performed. We estimate that the procedure will take less than two (2) hours to complete.
