Weld May Crack in Steering Shaft/Loss of Steering

If the steering column separates from the mating yoke, loss of steering control can occur, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Peterbilt 337 and 348 vehicles. An incorrectly located weld in the steering shaft may crack and cause the lower shaft within the steering column to separate from the mating yoke.

 

Remedy

PACCAR has notified owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the steering column, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began August 30, 2019. Owners may contact PACCAR customer service at 1-940-591-422. PACCAR’s number for this recall is 19PBD.

Safety Recall – Steering Column Weld

Introduction

Peterbilt Motors Company has determined that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, may exist in certain model year 2019 and 2020 Model 337 and 348 vehicles manufactured between 11/19/2018 and 8/15/2019.

The lower shaft to U-Joint yoke in certain non-telescoping steering columns may have a weld that did not create enough penetration and could crack. A cracked weld can lead to loss of steering and increase the risk of a crash or injury.

 

Resolution

SAFETY RECALL

Service all chassis affected that enter your dealership, even if the customer has no issue with the chassis.

1. Review the attached chassis list for your dealer code and schedule your customer(s) for service if their chassis is on the list.
2. If you are not using Service Management to start repair orders, review SIR for “Complete” or “In Process” next to the 19PBD campaign code prior to performing this repair.
3. Follow the procedures below to complete the inspection and replace the steering column if required.

 

It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease new vehicles covered by this recall until the defect or noncompliance has been corrected.

 

Warranty

There is no time or mileage limit for this recall. Peterbilt will pay for parts at dealer net plus applicable mark up and labor:

0.3 hours to inspect the label

• This labor is for inspection only. It is not applicable for trucks that require steering column replacement.
• A clear picture of the label is required for a claim to be processed.

0.8 hours to remove the steering column and replace with part number J19-6015-140400.

• A clear picture of the label is required for a claim to be processed.
• File a long form claim referencing 19PBD.

Dear Peterbilt Customer,

You are receiving this notice in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Peterbilt has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain
Model 337 and 348 vehicles manufactured between November 19, 2018 and August 15, 2019. The lower
shaft to U-Joint yoke in certain non-telescoping steering columns may have a weld that did not
create enough penetration and could crack. A cracked weld can lead to loss of steering and increase
the risk of a crash or injury.

What is the problem?	Steering column weld could crack and may lead to loss of steering.
What will your dealer do?	The dealer will inspect the serial number on your steering column to determine if it is affected and replace it if necessary.
What should you do?	Contact your Peterbilt dealer to schedule an appointment for this repair.
