Summary

Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. (BRP) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Can-Am Ryker motorcycles. The wheel nuts may crack, causing the wheels to loosen.

 

Remedy

BRP will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wheel nuts, free of charge. The recall began October 17, 2019. Owners may contact BRP customer service at 1-888-272-9222.

PROBLEM

One or more wheel nuts may crack resulting in a reduced clamping force. This could eventually affect the integrity of the wheel assembly and the vehicle’s behavior. This may increase the risk of a crash.

 

SOLUTION

Replace all wheel nuts on the vehicle.

The improved nut has a pronounced groove on one of its edges.

Removing the Front Wheel Nut

1. Place the vehicle on a level surface.

2. Lift and support the front of the vehicle.

USE THESE TUBES TO LIFT OR SUPPORT THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE

3. Turn the handlebar and lock the wheel hub with a locking device (such as a long Allen key or a tempered steel rod).

4. Remove the RED locking clip.

5. Remove and discard the center lock wheel nut.

Installing Front Wheel Nut

NOTICE The installation instruction and tightening torque values must be strictly adhered to. Failure to do so can lead to rim damage.

The installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. However, pay attention to the following. Tighten the center lock wheel nut to specification.

NOTICE Never use impact tools to tighten wheel nuts.

 

TIGHTENING TORQUE
Center lock wheel nut300 N•m ± 15 N•m

(221 lbf•ft ± 11 lbf•ft)

 

WARNING
Failure to install the RED locking clip may cause the loss of a wheel if the center lock wheel nut becomes loose.

 

RED locking clip installation is Mandatory

The folded end must point inside the drive axle.

1. Folded end pointing inside the drive axle

NOTICE Never untighten the nut to align the RED locking clip hole. Tighten the nut to the nominal value, then tighten further to align the hole.

Remove locking device from the wheel hub.

 

Removing the Rear Wheel Nut

1. Place the vehicle on a level surface.

2. Move the park position lever in the locked position.

3. Remove the RED locking clip.

4. Loosen the center lock wheel nut.

6. Remove and discard the center lock wheel nut.

Subject: Can-Am® Ryker – Wheel nut may crack

 

Dear Can-Am On-Road Dealer / Distributor, 

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act. BRP is conducting a safety recall on the 2019 and 2020 Can-Am Ryker.

 

What is the potential problem?

The wheel nuts may crack resulting in a reduced clamping force. This could eventually affect the integrity of the wheel assembly and the vehicle’s behavior. This may increase the risk of a crash.

 

Which models are involved?

Specific serial numbers of model year 2019 and 2020 Can-Am Ryker.

 

What will BRP do?

BRP intends to repair involved vehicles, free of charge for the customer. The parts required to
provide the remedy to this condition will be made available progressively.
BRP is sending a Safety Recall Notice letter to all known registered owners of the
involved vehicles to inform them of the safety recall.
BRP is posting this notice and attached Safety Campaign Bulletin on its BOSSWeb dealer
website (www.bossweb.brp.com).
Information for customers will be posted on its public website (www.can-am.brp.com).

 

What should you do?

  • Do not deliver any involved vehicle that you have in stock as federal law requires you to complete the recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery.
  • Contact all your customers who have purchased an affected Can-Am Ryker. You must inform them about the foregoing and must request them to make an appointment to get their vehicle repaired. Your customers may continue to ride their vehicle. If the vehicle has one or more cracked nuts, we encourage them to make the update promptly.

    Note: The presence of the red locking clip prevents a cracked nut from unscrewing.
  • Follow all instructions provided in the attached Safety Campaign Bulletin.

 

Please note that the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act provides that each vehicle which is subject to a recall campaign of this type must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the owner has tendered it for repair. Failure to repair within sixty (60) days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time. The owner may be entitled to an identical or reasonably equivalent vehicle at no charge or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation.

BRP will repair your vehicle free of charge. The corrective action involves replacing the three wheel nuts. This service should take less than one hour. The parts required to provide the remedy to this condition will be made available progressively.

Contact your authorized BRP Can-Am On-Road dealer and schedule an appointment to have the safety recall performed on your vehicle.

 

You may continue to ride your vehicle. If your vehicle has one or more cracked nuts, we encourage you to have your vehicle updated promptly.

Although your unit may have aftermarket modifications, you can still receive this service free of charge. The presence of these modifications, while the service is being completed, will not void any existing warranty or service contract.
