Internal Short Circuit Can Cause Fire

A short circuit in the uStart module can increase the risk of a fire.

Summary

Ioxus Corporation is recalling certain 12V uSTART MD battery support modules, part number uST12D1100G31-ISA. The uSTART module electronics can short circuit internally, causing the vehicle’s battery to fully discharge into the uSTART module, possibly resulting in a fire.

 

Remedy

Ioxus Corporation will notify owners advising them to remove the uSTART module from the vehicle and replace it with a conventional G31 lead acid battery. The recall began on January 2, 2020. Owners may contact Ioxus Corporation customer service at 1-877-751-4222. This recall supersedes NHTSA Recall 18E-093.

Dear uSTART owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Ioxus has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety could potentially exist within certain 12V uSTART MD products.

 

!IMPORTANT!

 

• Your uSTART product is being recalled 
• You should remove the uSTART and replace it with a conventional G31 lead acid battery

 

 

Why is a recall being conducted?	The uSTART ultracapacitor module electronics can short circuit internally, causing the vehicle’s battery to fully discharge into the uSTART module, resulting in smoke or possibly a fire within the battery box.
What are we doing about the problem?	Any uSTART currently installed in a vehicle should be removed and replaced with a conventional G31 lead acid battery.
What should you do?	Remove and dispose of any uSTART currently installed in a vehicle.  Replace it with a conventional G31 lead acid battery.  Do not resell or reuse the uSTART product for this or any other application.

SAFETY RECALL NOTICE

Ioxus, Inc. has decided that a safety defect could potentially exist in certain uSTART units.  Accordingly, a recall of all existing uSTART units to address this issue was initiated effective November 15, 2019.

The uSTART ultracapacitor module electronics can short circuit internally, causing the vehicle’s battery to fully discharge into the uSTART module, resulting in smoke or possibly a fire within the battery box.

Owners will be notified by mail about the recall and will be instructed to remove the uSTART and replace it with a conventional G31 lead acid battery.

Please be reminded that it is a violation of Federal law for you to sell or lease a uSTART covered by this recall notification.  Substantial civil penalties apply to violations of this law.
