Summary

Mack Trucks, Inc. (Mack) is recalling certain 2020 Anthem (AN), Granite (GR), and Pinnacle (PI) vehicles. The castle nuts and cotter pins used to connect the steering drag link to the pitman arm and steering arm may have not been correctly installed, potentially causing separation of the drag link.

 

Remedy

Mack will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the drag link attachment points, repairing them, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began January 14, 2020. Owners may contact Mack customer service at 1-800-866-1177. Mack’s number for this recall is SC0420.

SAFETY RECALL INFORMATION:

(January 2020) 

Mack Trucks has determined a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain Anthem, Granite or Pinnacle models manufactured between 09/16/2019 and 10/11/2019. The drag link castle nuts may not have been torqued correctly and/or split pin missing; if this condition is untreated, a complete loss of steering may be possible. The mounting hardware should be replaced with new mounting hardware each time the drag link rod is replaced. Follow the repair procedure outlined in this Safety Recall.

Mack Trucks has received no reports of personal injury or a vehicle crash as a result of this condition. Therefore, Mack Trucks considers this as a proactive measure to protect the public and Mack Trucks’ customers from the potential risk associated with this defect.

 

VEHICLES AFFECTED:

Certain 2020 Anthem, Granite and Pinnacle model vehicles manufactured from September 16, 2019 through October 11, 2019.

 

VEHICLE INDENTIFICATION NUMBERS (VIN):

The total number of vehicles affected is 87 (80 U.S., 6 Canada, and 1 Mexico).

Repair Procedure: 

1. Replace drag link castle nut and torque tighten to 200 Nm (148 ft-lbs).
2. Install new split pins and mark nuts with tamper-proof

This repair is covered by an authorized Safety Recall campaign. Reimbursement is obtained through the normal claim handling process.

DEAR MACK TRUCK OWNER:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Mack Trucks, Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in a certain 2020 Anthem, Granite, and Pinnacle model vehicles manufactured from September 16, 2019 to October 10, 2019.

SAFETY DEFECT:	On certain trucks, a nut and cotter pin in the steering system may not have been correctly installed. As a result, the drag link could separate and cause a loss of steering control.
SAFETY RISK:	A loss of steering control would increase the risk of a crash.
PRECAUTIONS YOU CAN TAKE:	There are no precautions you can take other than having your vehicle inspected and repaired if needed by a Mack Parts and Service Center.
TIME REQUIRED FOR THE REPAIR:	The time required to inspect and/or repair your vehicle is approximately 1 hours.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:	You should contact the nearest Mack Parts and Service Center and make an appointment. Mack dealers will inspect the drag link attachment points and repair your truck as needed at no charge to you. NOTICE REGARDING LEASED VEHICLES:	If you are a Lessor of vehicles subject to this Notice, you have an obligation under Federal Law to provide a copy of this Notice to all Lessees within 10 days of your receipt of this Notice.  Further, you must maintain a record, which identifies the Lessee(s) to whom you send a copy of this letter, the date you send this letter, and the Vehicle Identification Number(s) of the vehicle(s) that you have leased to that lessee.  For purposes of this Notice, the term Lessor means: a person or entity that is the owner, as reflected on the vehicle’s title, of any five or more leased vehicles (as defined in CFR Section 577.4), as of the date of notification by the manufacturer of the existence of a safety-related defect or non-compliance with a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard in one or more of the leased motor vehicles.

Submit copies of all documentation supporting your claim according to the rules specified in the “General Plan for Reimbursement of Prenotification Remedies” provided in this mailing.

Description of Defect: 

The castle nuts and cotter pins used to connect the steering drag link to the pitman arm and steering arm may have not been correctly installed (i.e. castle nut may be under-torqued and cotter pin may not be installed). If undetected, the defect may result in separation of the drag link, which may result in loss of steering and a vehicle crash.

Dealer’s Responsibility:

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act requires dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.

Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.

 

Release Schedule:

• Vehicle list will be posted on the Trucks Dealer Portal December 20, 2019.
• Owner notification letters will be released on or before February 6, 2020.
