Summary

Mack Trucks, Inc. (Mack) is recalling certain 2019-2020 TerraPro (TE) vehicles. The headlamps may not be properly aimed, possibly reducing the driver’s visibility. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”

 

Remedy

Mack will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and readjust the headlamps, free of charge. The recall began January 24, 2020. Owners may contact Mack customer service at 1-800-866-1177. Mack’s number for this recall is SC0421.

SAFETY RECALL INFORMATION:

(January 2020)

Mack Trucks has determined a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety may exist on certain TerraPro models manufactured between 10/29/2018 and 10/11/2019. The headlights may not be aimed correctly. Headlamps that are not properly aimed could cause reduced visibility as well as glare for oncoming drivers and increase the risk of a crash.

Mack Trucks has received no reports of personal injury or a vehicle crash as a result of this condition. Therefore, Mack Trucks considers this as a proactive measure to protect the public and Mack Trucks’ customers from the potential risk associated with this defect.

 

VEHICLES AFFECTED:

Certain 2019 & 2020 TerraPro (TE) model vehicles manufactured from October 29, 2018, through October 11, 2019.

 

VEHICLE QUANTITIES:

The total number of vehicles affected is 2112 (222 Canada, 1 Export, 10 Mexico, and 1879 USA).

 

Solution:

Check the headlamps aim and adjust if necessary.

 

Vehicle Preparation:

Observe the following points in preparing the vehicle for headlamp aiming:

1. The floor area that the vehicle and adjusting equipment is on must be level.
2. The vehicle should be unloaded.
3. Tires should be properly inflated.
4. Vehicles with air suspension systems should be properly inflated.
5. Check for broken or sagging springs on vehicles with mechanical suspension systems.
6. Rock the vehicle to equalize the springs.
7. Remove any large accumulation of mud or ice from under the hood or fender.
8. The hood or Cab should be closed and latched.

 

Electronic Adjustment Procedure:

1. Park the vehicle on a flat and level surface.
2. Apply parking brake.
3. Place the gear lever in neutral or park.
4. Install the wheel chocks.
5. Check the headlights aim.

Note: When using electronic optical aiming equipment, follow the aiming procedures as instructed in the aiming equipment suppliers’ instructions.

6. If an adjustment is needed to center the headlight:
7. 1. Turn the left screw clockwise to adjust the light to the right, and turn the left screw counter-clockwise to adjust the light to the left.
   2. Turn the top screw clockwise to adjust the light upward, and turn the top screw counter-clockwise to adjust the light downward.

When the electronic optical aiming equipment is not available, follow the manual headlamp adjustment procedure.

 

Manual Adjustment Procedure:

1. Park the vehicle on a flat and level surface and 25 feet away from the aiming screen/wall.
2. Measure the headlamp center point from ground.

Note: Headlamp center point is marked on Headlamp lens.

3. Turn On headlamp low beam.
4. Measure the headlamp center point from the ground.
   • When within 36 to 48 inches, the top edge of the headlamp beam on the aiming screen/wall should measure 2 inches less than the height of the headlamp center point measured from ground.
   • When within 48 to 54 inches, the top edge of the headlamp beam on the aiming screen/wall should measure 2.5 inches less than the height of the headlamp center point measured from ground.
   • Ensure the headlamp beam is not veering left to right, must be straight.

Note: The illustration shown is for reference only. The value of headlamp center point measured from ground and height of headlamp beam on the aiming screen/wall will vary from one vehicle to another.

Dealer’s Responsibility:

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act requires dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.

Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.

 

Release Schedule:

• Vehicle list will be posted on the Trucks Dealer Portal December 20, 2019.
• Owner notification letters will be released on or before February 6, 2020.
