Summary

Triumph Motorcycles America, LTD (Triumph) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Speed Twin motorcycles. The gear shift lever linkage may separate from shifter ball joint, resulting in an inability to change gears.

 

Remedy

Triumph will notify owners, and dealers will secure the attachment with a different thread locking compound, free of charge. The recall began January 27, 2020. Owners may contact Triumph customer service at 1-678-854-2010. Triumph’s number for this recall is SRAN 569.

Background Information

Internal investigations have identified a need to apply locking compound to the threads of the gear change ball joints on the above model.

Dealers are requested to apply locking compound to the gear change ball joints, as per the instructions below.

Notice

STOP DELIVERY OF AFFECTED MOTORCYCLES IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT deliver a motorcycle affected by this Safety Recall Action Notice to a customer until you have completed, or confirmed completion of, the procedures described in this Safety Recall Action Notice. Delivering a motorcycle subject to an outstanding Safety Recall Action Notice may contravene local or national laws in your market, territory or country.

 

Triumph subsidiaries and distributors must instigate a Safety Recall Action in their country in accordance with the national recall code of practice. For vehicles in dealer stock, the safety recall MUST be actioned before delivery to the customer.

Dealers are to prioritise repair of customer owned motorcycles before any unsold motorcycles.

• Some affected motorcycles listed in the VIN range will have been modified and repaired by Triumph prior to their release from the factory.

Ball Joint Locking Compound Application Instructions

Warning

Make sure the motorcycle is stabilised and adequately supported. A correctly supported motorcycle will help prevent it from falling. An unstable motorcycle may fall, causing injury to the operator or damage to the motorcycle.

Warning

If the motorcycle has recently been running, some components may be hot to the touch. Contact with the hot components may cause damage to exposed skin. To avoid skin damage, always allow the hot parts to cool before working on the motorcycle.

 

1. Remove the gear change clamp fixing.
2. Remove the gear change pivot bolt and remove the gear change pedal assembly from the motorcycle.

Note:

• There is no requirement for the gear change link rod to be disassembled and it should not be disturbed. The ball joints and gear change link rod stay as an assembly.
• The gear change link rod must be installed in the correct orientation. Note the position and orientation of the gear change link rod for installation.

3. Remove the front ball joint from the gear change clamp. Do not remove the ball joint from the gear change linkage rod.
4. Remove the rear ball joint from the gear change pedal and remove the gear change link rod assembly, noting the orientation for installation.

 

5. Thoroughly clean the threads of the ball joints and mating parts and make sure they are free of old locking compound.
6. Apply Threebond 1375B or an equivalent locking compound to the threads of the ball joints.
7. Position the gear change link rod as noted during removal and install the front and rear ball joints to the gear change clamp and gear change pedal. Tighten the ball joints to 8 Nm.
8. Align the mark on the gear change clamp with the alignment mark on the gear change shaft and fit the clamp to the spline. Install the fixing and tighten to 8 Nm.
9. Thoroughly clean the threads of the gear change pivot bolt.
10. Apply Threebond 1375B or an equivalent locking compound to the thread of the gear change pivot bolt. Install the pivot bolt and tighten to 22 Nm.
11. Allow ten minutes for the locking compound bond to be achieved.
12. Make sure the gear change mechanism operates smoothly.

 

Other Instructions

Once completed, please mark the Service Record Book that the requirements of this Safety Recall Action Notice have been complied with.

Before returning the motorcycle to the customer, download the latest calibration to the engine electronic control module, chassis electronic control module (if fitted), keyless electronic control module (if fitted) and instruments (if applicable) using the current version of the Triumph diagnostic software.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Triumph Motorcycles Ltd. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in your motorcycle, with the VIN shown above. Accordingly, Triumph Motorcycles America Ltd. is conducting a safety recall to address the condition.

The reason for this recall notice:	The gear shift lever linkage may become loose from the front or rear ball joints, impeding a smooth gear change; resulting in an inability to change gear. A loss of gear selection without warning may increase the risk of a crash.
What Triumph & your dealer will do:	Triumph Motorcycles America Ltd. has authorized your dealer to re-bond the clamp linkage ball joints, free of charge to you (labour (there are no parts to replace)).  This repair should take less than 30 minutes. However, depending upon the dealer’s work schedule, it may be necessary to make your motorcycle available for a longer period of time.
What you must do to ensure your safety:	Please make an appointment with your authorized Triumph motorcycles dealer to have this important remedy performed on your motorcycle as soon as possible. Federal regulations require that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within 10 days.
If you need help:	Please contact your authorized Triumph dealer should you have any questions or encounter any difficulty regarding this recall. In the event your dealer is unable to remedy your motorcycle, please contact Triumph Motorcycles America at 1-678-854-2010.

Triumph Motorcycles has initiated a voluntary safety recall affecting a specific VIN range of the below-referenced Speed Twin models.

Please consult the attached Safety Recall Action 569 PDF immediately for complete instructions.

Internal investigations have identified a need to apply locking compound to the threads of the gear change ball joints on the below models. Dealers are requested to apply locking compound to the gear change ball joints, as per the instructions attached.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

The gear change lever linkage may become loose from the front or rear ball joints, impeding a smooth gear change; resulting in an inability to change gear. A loss of gear selection without warning may increase the risk of a crash.

 

WHAT WILL TRIUMPH DO?

To address this condition, Triumph is launching a new recall as described in Safety Recall Action 569. All arrangements for updating of our computer systems will be completed today.

Notification letters to current customers will be mailed beginning January 22, 2020 explaining the action and advising owners to return their bike to a Triumph dealer to have the modification carried out free of charge.

 

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

All affected motorcycles are to be repaired in accordance with Safety Recall Action 569.

It is imperative that any owner who has purchased an affected machine be contacted by you immediately and asked to return the machine for modification.

 

Triumph Dealers should take the following actions:

1. You must quarantine all unsold stock (including stock for sale on your website and with third parties) and arrange modification as per Safety Recall Action 569 prior to any further deliveries to customers. You can check those machines in your unsold stock that require modification by using Triumph Online (TOL). Do this by undertaking the following simple steps:
2. 1. Once signed into the site, select Motorcycle Sales and then Stock Management (this will provide you a display summary of your unsold machines by model).
   2. Select the affected model to view the individual VIN details of your unsold machines. We strongly recommend you check this listing against your physical stock and advise us of any discrepancies. Machines containing a  symbol of a ‘spanner’ (indicating Bulletin or Safety Recall Action Notice outstanding) will require attention. Select the VIN to open a dialogue window. Details of all outstanding bulletin(s) and Safety Recall Action Notices are contained in the bottom half of the screen. To view the bulletin content, click on the Union Jack “flag” to open an English language PDF document or alternative flags for other language options (when available). This can be read and/or printed off as required.

2. Owners of machines outside of the affected VIN range are not connected with this action and may therefore require Reassurance.
3. Some VINs affected by this Safety Recall Action Notice may also require other bulletin or Safety Recall Action Notice work to be carried out. Please use the above described system tools to identify all outstanding bulletins or notices and make arrangements to carry out these repairs at the same time.
4. Read, download and circulate the above-mentioned Safety Recall Action 569 to relevant staff and ensure all Sales and Service staff are aware of this action.
5. This action is likely to increase visitor traffic to your showroom and service areas. Please ensure all arrangements are made to best accommodate them.
