Heat Coil May Not Disengage with A/C

If the heat coil does not disengage with the air conditioner, heat can increase inside the unit, increasing the risk of a fire.

Summary

Winnebago Industries, Inc (Winnebago) is recalling certain 2020 Adventurer motorhomes. When using 30 AMP service, the heat coil may not disengage when the Power Control System (PCS) calls to stop the air conditioner power.

 

Remedy

Winnebago will notify owners, and dealers will install a blocking diode at the air conditioner unit, free of charge. The recall began February 6, 2020. Owners may contact Winnebago customer service at 1-641-585-6939 or 1-800-537-1885. Winnebago’s number for this recall is 161.

INSTRUCTIONS TO PERFORM RECALL CAMPAIGN 161

Models Affected

2020 Winnebago Adventurer

Tools and Parts Required

Screw Gun
#2 Philips bit
Recall Repair Kit # RC7646-20-761

NOTE: Only use the parts supplied in the recall kit to complete this repair.

 

Before proceeding

Verify all power sources have been disabled. 

• Shore power
• Coach Battery
• Chassis Battery

 

Component Removal

Locate the air conditioner inside the coach.

Remove the return air grill.  Retain for later use.

Remove the return air filter.  Retain for later use.

Locate and remove six (6) screws holding the shroud to the air conditioner unit.  Retain for later use.

Behind the shroud, locate the terminal block.

Locate the Y terminal and disconnect.
The circuit should be:
Front Air conditioner: XP
Rear Air conditioner: DD

Connect the disconnected circuit to the male end of the jumper.

Connect the female end of the jumper to the Y terminal.

 

Component Reinstall

Place the wires back into the opening.

**Ensure the wires are not touching the Reinstall the return air filter. heat coil, or any sharp edges.**

Reinstall the air conditioner shroud using the six (6) screws retained earlier.

Reinstall the return air grill.

 

Test

After all components have been reinstalled, test functions of the air conditioner, heater coil, and Power Control System (PCS).

The coach will have one of the following two control panels.

– Familiarize yourself with the controls and menus for the test outlined below.

Connect the coach to 30 AMP service.

Turn on both air conditioners and engage the heater coils by setting the thermostat to heat and increasing the temperature above ambient. Begin with the front unit, then proceed to the rear unit.

Set the PCS to 20 AMP.
The PCS should shed the rear A/C within a few seconds. Verify the PCS amperage has dropped and the heater coils have properly shed with the air conditioner.

With the front air conditioner unit still running, continue the test by placing a cup of water in the microwave and operate the microwave on high set for 15 seconds.
Once the microwave has started, the PCS should shed the front air conditioner unit.

Verify the PCS amperage has dropped and the heater coils have properly shed with the air conditioners.
If the heating coil is not shed by the PCS
Turn off the A/C and review installation of blocking diode.
