Summary

PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2008-2019 Peterbilt 330, 335, 337, 340, 348, 365, 367, 384, 386, 387, 388, 389, 567, 579 and 587 vehicles and 2008-2020 Kenworth T170, T270, T370, T660, T680, T800, T880, and W900 vehicles equipped with NAMUX Software. In the event that the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) loses battery and/or ignition power to the controller, the dash warning light for the ABS may not illuminate to warn the driver of the loss of ABS. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, “Air Brake Systems,” and 136, “Electronic Stability Control System on Heavy Vehicles.”

 

Remedy

PACCAR will notify owners, and dealers will update the NAMUX software within the cab control module, free of charge. PACCAR issued owners an interim notification on June 4, 2020. The recall began May 26, 2020. Owners may contact Kenworth customer service at 1-425-828-5888 or Peterbilt customer service at 1-940-591-4220. PACCAR’s number for this recall is 20pbc AND 20KWB.

In some configurations, the ABS warning lamp on the dash will not illuminate. Unknowingly operating a vehicle with an inoperative ABS system could lead to an increased risk of an accident or injury.

Introduction

Kenworth Truck Company has determined that certain Vehicle Model Year 2007 through 2019 C500, T440/T470, T600, T660, T680, T800, T880, and W900 vehicles manufactured from January 24, 2007 through January 31, 2018 fail to conform to the following standards:

• U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 121 – Air brake systems;
• FMVSS No. 136 – Electronic Stability Control Systems on Heavy Vehicles;
• Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) No. 121 – Air brake systems; and
• CMVSS 136 – Electronic Stability Control Systems on Heavy Vehicles.

Fleets may have vehicles included in this recall and in Safety Recall 18KWD.

 

Situation

237,849 chassis C500, T440/T470, T600, T660, T680, T800, T880, and W900 built from 01/24/2007 through 01/31/2018 equipped with:

• NAMUX2 with software version P30-1030-001 through -114
• NAMUX3 with software version P30-1031-1001 through -120
• NAMUX4 with software version P30-1011-003 through -143

 

Resolution

This bulletin will be updated as soon as a repair procedure is completed and made available.

It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease new vehicles covered by this recall until the defect or noncompliance has been corrected.

Dear Kenworth Customer,

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Kenworth Truck Company has determined that certain model year 2007 through 2019 C500, T440/T470, T600, T660, T680, T800, T880, and W900 vehicles manufactured during 01/24/2007 through 01/31/2018 fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 121 – Air brake systems and 136 – Electronic Stability Control Systems on Heavy Vehicles.

The Tractor ABS lamp may not illuminate when the vehicle experiences a loss of battery and/or ignition power to the ABS controller. Unknowingly operating a vehicle with an inoperative ABS system could lead to an increased risk of a crash or injury.

If you own multiple vehicles, your vehicles could be on either recall number. Your Kenworth dealer will advise the applicable recall number for each vehicle after the software update becomes available.

What your dealer will do …	Dealers will update the vehicle software after the update is available.
What you must do …	When you are notified the software update is available, contact your Kenworth Dealer to schedule an appointment for repair

 

Kenworth has initiated a recall to remedy the issue. A software update is not yet available to correct this condition. However, Kenworth is required to notify customers of the existence of the identified issue. Another letter will be mailed when the software becomes available.

Situation	237,144 chassis C500, T440/T470, T600, T660, T680, T800, T880, and W900 built from 01/24/2007 through 01/31/2018 equipped with: NAMUX2 with software version P30-1030-001 through -114 NAMUX3 with software version P30-1031-001 through -120 NAMUX4 with software version P30-1011-003 through -143 The NAMUX software illuminates the Tractor ABS/ESC Lamps when the voltage from the ABS/ESC ECU drops below 25% of the battery input voltage present at the CECU. In the instance where the ABS/ESC ECU loses power (i.e. the fuse blows) the voltage being measured may not drop below the 25% voltage threshold, thus the ABS and/or ESC malfunction lamp will not illuminate.
Resolution	Service all chassis affected that enter your dealership, even if the customer has no issue with the chassis. 1.       Review the attached chassis list for your dealer code and schedule your customer(s) for service if their chassis is on the list. 2.       If you are not using Service Management to start repair orders, review DWWC or SIR for “Complete” next to the “20KWB” campaign code prior to performing this repair. 3.       Follow the procedures below to update the NAMUX software to the latest available version and verify or set certain software parameters versus Web eCAT.
It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease new vehicles covered by this recall until the defect or noncompliance has been corrected.

 

Warranty	There is no time or mileage limit for this bulletin, though the repair instructions may be superseded by future software enhancement bulletins. Kenworth will pay for labor:  NOTE Several field actions share the same NAMUX software update as the final repair. As a result, if a chassis comes into the shop and more than one of the below field actions are applicable, use the following guidance for filing claims. If you file for more than one of the listed field actions, your claims will be rejected. Field Action # Filing instruction 18KWD/20KWB   If this Safety Recall is Open and 43-063 is also Open in SIR, then only file for this Safety Recall.
