Summary
Lode-King Industries LTD. (Lode-King) is recalling certain 2015-2021 Prestige SDG53-2 step-deck semi-trailers. The cargo securing winches may not be properly mounted to the trailer. As a result, the cargo winch mount could fail and allow cargo to come loose.
Remedy
Lode-King will notify owners, and dealers will replace the cargo winches with an updated version, free of charge. Owners may contact Lode-King customer service at 1-204-325-4345.

This notice applies to Prestige step deck semi-trailers
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Lode King Industries has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist with Prestige semi-trailers sold by your dealership that could affect your safety.
Details are as follows:

c. This defect relates to the cargo winches fastened to the side rails of the trailer. Specifically, these are the cargo winches located in the area immediately beside the loading ramps which are inset into the floor of your trailer, at the drop section. See the accompanying pictures below for a visual reference.
d. This defect is related to the weld that joins the cargo winch to its mounting plate. That weld may be of insufficient strength to meet the load rating assigned to that device.
If this defect were to manifest, it could result in the cargo winch breaking free from the side rail of the trailer, allowing the cargo on the deck to come loose. This would be of particular concern in the case of a crash/accident where significantly higher forces can be experienced. Cargo that comes loose or falls from the trailer could create a risk of injury and create a road hazard for others.
e. The corrective action for this issue will be to replace the defective items with new cargo winches that are redesigned to correct the deficiency. These winches are of a bolt-on design so the defective piece can be simply unbolted, removed and the replacement items bolted back in its place. Your trailer has either 3 or 4 of these winches that need to be replaced.
f. Until such time as we are able to carry out the replacement of these items on your trailer, we ask that you visually inspect them to ensure they are not cracked, distorted or otherwise damaged.
g. The new replacement winches are currently being manufactured. As soon as they are completed we will be shipping these parts to our dealers. At that time we will send another notification letter to advise you that it is time to get your trailer into the dealer’s service shop for the work to be carried out. We are planning to have the replacement cargo winches sent to your dealer by 2020 May 22.
h. The replacement of these defective cargo winches will be carried out by your authorized Lode King dealer at no cost to you. We are allowing one hour of shop time to make this change, unless there is also a toolbox in the way. If a toolbox needs to be removed to gain access, we are allowing an additional hour to remove and reinstall the toolbox.
i. Any trailer lessor receiving this recall notice should forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within 10 working days.

We are planning to ship the upgrade winches out to your location so they can be installed when customers bring their trailers in for the Recall rework to be carried out.
h. We are allowing one hour of shop time to make this change, unless there is also a toolbox in the way. If a toolbox needs to be removed to gain access, we are allowing an additional hour to remove and reinstall the toolbox.

SUBJECT: Status Report – Defect and Recall Campaign # 20V230
Please accept this letter as our first quarterly status report for the subject recall campaign. In this recall campaign we identified two (2) semi-trailers that are being recalled to correct a problem with the cargo winches installed along the side rails of the trailer when it was manufactured.
One of these trailers was originally sold to a customer here in Canada but, was later imported into the United States. The company that had owned this trailer and that imported it has since gone bankrupt. We have no way of knowing who currently owns that trailer or where it is located.
For the other trailer, it has been located in Texas. We have been in communication via email and telephone with this end user. We have provided him with the correct replacement winches for that trailer. He has also confirmed that the new winches have, in fact, been installed on the affected trailer.
Unless something changes with respect to the trailer that was owned by the bankrupt customer, all of our subsequent Status Reports will be a copy of this one. Is it necessary to continue to submit the same report over and over? May we consider this our Final Status Report for this recall campaign?
