Drum Brake Axles
S-Cam Guide Plate Installation
These instructions are to be used in conjunction with the SAF Service Manual for Drum Brake Axles XL-TA10006OM-en-US Rev A available on the SAF-HOLLAND website at www.safholland.us. All safety procedures contained in the Service Manual MUST be read and understood before starting any work on the suspension/axle.
- Remove the following by referencing the appropriate Section of the SAF Service Manual for Drum Brake Axles: a. Wheels and brake drum, Section 6.
- Brake shoes, Section 13.
- Automatic slack adjuster, Section 15.
- S-Cam, Section 17.
- Remove and discard the outer round cam washer (Figure 1).
- Install the new S-Cam guide plate. The S-Cam guide plate MUST be installed with the tabs bent toward the center of the vehicle and the wider space between the bent tabs toward the axle (Figure 2).
- Install the S-camshaft according to instructions in Section 18 of the SAF Service Manual for Drum Brakes Axles.
- Make sure that the newly installed S-Cam guide plate is properly orientated (Figures 3). DO NOT install the S-Cam guide plate with the tabs toward the S-Head (Figure 4) or with the narrow space toward the axle (Figures 5).
- Install the following by referencing the appropriate Section of the SAF Service Manual for Drum Brake Axles: a. Brake shoes, drums and wheels, Section 14.
- Slack adjuster, Section 16.
- Verify brake adjustment according to the procedures in Section 19 of the SAF Service Manual for Drum Brakes Axles.
