® SL-4™ STOP LIGHT SWITCH RECALL
(PART NUMBERS K101993, K101996, K108141, AND K108142)
Bendix
Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC is conducting a voluntary safety recall campaign, Recall No.: 20E092, involving the Bendix
® SL-4™ stop light switch (K101993, K101996, K108141, and K108142). This includes SL-4 stop light switches manufactured between December 1, 2019 and January 31, 2020, inclusive.
Identification:
Impacted SL-4 stop light switches, manufactured between December 1, 2019 and January 31, 2020, can be identified by the date code printed on a white Bendix
label affixed to the unit. The date code, featuring a “Month/Year” format, will appear in black or red type. For example, an SL-4 stop light switch manufactured in December of 2019 will have a date code of “12/19.” An SL-4 stop light switch with a date code of either “12/19 or 1/20” would represent one of the potentially affected units that is included in the recall campaign. Products outside of this specified date code range are not affected.
Problem Description:
Bendix
has determined that a component manufactured at a Bendix
sub-supplier was not within specification limits and has led to the defect – improperly formed threads do not provide necessary clamp loads to withstand normal air brake system pressures. This may cause the SL-4 switch to remain in either the open or closed state, resulting in the vehicle stop lamps staying illuminated or failing to extinguish promptly. If the pressure switch is used to control the brake lamps, the result of the jammed contacts might be that the brake lights do not illuminate or that the brake lights constantly remain illuminated increasing the likelihood of a crash.
NOTE: It’s also important to note that the service, parking, and emergency brakes of the vehicle are not affected by this condition. In addition, there is no impact to stopping distance or parking performance of the vehicle if this issue arises.
A leaking switch may make an audible sound that can be detected by the driver during operation or during pre-trip inspection. The driver may also notice the stop lamp is illuminated during pre-trip inspection. A warning light may appear on the vehicle dash. There have been no reports of any injuries or accidents related to this issue.
Vehicles Affected:
This recall affects only a limited population of vehicles utilizing an SL-4 stop light switch – Bendix
Part Numbers K101993, K101996, K108141, and K108142 – manufactured between December 1, 2019 and January 31, 2020, inclusive.
What You Need To Do:
Immediately stop using and/or selling any of the SL-4 stop light switches that fall within the recall parameters. It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer or distributor to sell a stop light switch that is subject to this recall. Ensure your customers are aware of the recall campaign.
Inventory Disposition:
If your current parts inventory, including vehicles still within your possession, contains SL-4 stop light switches (Bendix
Part Numbers K101993, K101996, K108141, and K108142) manufactured between December 1, 2019 and January 31, 2020, inclusive, please contact Shelly Neff at our Huntington, Indiana, Customer Service Center. Please phone Shelly Neff, toll-free, by calling 1-800-AIR-BRAKE, ext. 4417 (1-800-247-2725, ext. 4417) to arrange for the return of any affected inventory currently in stock. Action Required For Identifying the Recalled Bendix® SL-4™ Stop Light Switch
Identifying Bendix
® SL-4™ Stop Light Switches Covered in this Field Action
The Bendix
® SL-4™ stop light switch includes a date code printed on a white Bendix
label affixed to the unit. The date code, featuring a “Month/Year” format, appears in red type. Stop light switches covered by this campaign would have a date code of either 12/19 or 01/20. For example, an SL-4 stop light switch manufactured in December of 2019 will have a date code of “12/19” in red type, and an SL-4 stop light switch manufactured in January of 2020 will have a date code of “01/20” in red type. Verification of the date code is required to determine if the stop light switch is a part of the recall campaign.
If the date code is either 12/19 or 01/20, it can be assumed the stop light switch is part of the recall campaign and needs to be replaced. If the date code is neither 12/19 nor 01/20, it can be assumed the stop light switch is not affected by this recall or the switch has already been replaced.
