Brake Light Pressure Switch Malfunction

Jammed electrical contacts in the brake light switch can cause the brake lights to remain illuminated, or fail to illuminate. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

Summary

Crane CarriereBay logo Company (Crane CarriereBay logo) is recalling certain 2020-2021 LET2 vehicles equipped with certain SL-4 Brake Light Pressure switches. When air pressure is supplied to the brake light switch it may leak, possibly causing the internal electrical contacts to become jammed.

 

Remedy

Crane CarriereBay logo will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake light switch manufacturing date, and replace it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on March 25, 2021. Owners may contact Crane CarriereBay logo customer service at 1-877-546-2537.

Units Involved: Chassis produced between the dates of December 2019 and March 2021. A list of suspect vehicles is attached part of this service bulletin.

Topic: Inspection and replacement of suspected defective BendixeBay logo SL-4 Stop Light switches.

BendixeBay logo has determined that a component manufactured at a BendixeBay logo sub-supplier was not within specification limits and has led to the potential defect – improperly formed threads do not provide necessary clamp loads to withstand normal air brake system pressures. This may cause the SL-4 switch to remain in either the open or closed state, resulting in the vehicle stop lamps staying illuminated or not extinguishing promptly. If the pressure switch is used to control brake lamps, the result of the jammed contacts might be that the brake lights do not illuminate or that the brake lights constantly remain illuminated increasing the risk of a crash. To correct this, CCC is authorizing an inspection and replacement of the SL-4 switch.

 

Warranty Status: Reimbursement by warranty claim utilizing one of the following codes:

  • 00-BDX-001: Inspection without replacement – 0.3 hours.
  • 00-BDX-002: Inspection and replacement of one (1) switch – 0.5 hours.
  • 00-BDX-003: Inspection and replacement of two (2) switches – 1.0 hours.
  • Order Part Number: 308F-0001, max quantity of two (2)

 

Urgent attention to this service bulletin is required. Failure to complete this service in a timely manner may result in equipment damage or personal injury.

 

Service Instructions:

1. Determine if the chassis is one of the suspected units by referencing the following list. If the unit is on the list, proceed to step two, if it is not, no further action is required.

 

2. Locate the stop light switches located on the double check valves, under the right-hand side of the cab on the inside of the frame rail.

 

3. Inspect the switches to determine if the date code can be found, and if it is shown as “12/19” or “01/20”. The BendixeBay logo® SL-4™ stop light switch includes a date code printed on a white BendixeBay logo label affixed to the unit. The date code, featuring a “Month/Year” format, appears in red type. Stop light switches covered by this campaign would have a date code of either 12/19 or 01/20. For example, an SL-4 stop light switch manufactured in December of 2019 will have a date code of “12/19” in red type, and an SL-4 stop light switch manufactured in January of 2020 will have a date code of “01/20” in red type. Verification of the date code is required to determine if the stop light switch is a part of the recall campaign.

 

4. If the date code can be determined and is not in the specified range, no further action is required. If one or both switches is within the specified range, proceed to step 5.

 

5. Remove the two wires from the suspect switch. Remove the switch from the manifold utilizing the appropriate size wrench.

 

6. Reinstall the new switch utilizing the reverse procedure from step 5.

 

7. Verify the operation of brake lights by building up a minimum of 120 psi air pressure, release the parking brakes, and applying the service brakes. Brake lights should come on with the service brakes applied and go off with the service brake released. Ensure the wheels are chocked before releasing the parking brake.
