Summary

Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is recalling certain 2018 J4500 vehicles. The left rear taillight harness branch of the engine compartment wiring may contact the engine coolant tank causing a loss of power to the left taillight. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”

 

Remedy

MCI will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the left taillight wiring harness, re-routing and repairing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on April 23, 2018. Owners may contact MCI customer service at 1-800-241-2947. MCI’s number for this recall is SB 461.

Attention Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Motor Coach Industries, Inc. has become aware that on certain model year 2018 MCI J4500 coaches, the left hand tail lamp harness branch of the engine compartment wiring harness may chafe against the engine coolant tank.  If this occurs, the chafing could damage the wires and cause a loss of power to the left tail lamp lights, resulting in a noncompliance with FMVSS 108.  Failure of the left hand tail lamp lighting could result in vehicles following the affected coach to experience reduced indication of the coach turning or stopping.  At night, the loss of the left hand tail lamp will reduce the rear visibility of the coach.  Reduced visibility of the coach during turning, stopping, and at night could result in a crash and cause personal injury.

MCI is conducting a recall to repair the affected vehicles.  The recall work will be provided at no cost to you, and is estimated to take a half hour to complete.  Please see the enclosed MCI Service Bulletin 461 for further information.
