Roof Mounted Body Panel May Become Detached

The roof mounted body panel may detach and become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc. (Tiffin) is recalling certain 2021 Phaeton motorhomes, equipped with a roof mounted passenger side awning. A roof mounted body panel may have been improperly attached to the roof.

 

Remedy

Tiffin will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, properly adhere the body panel, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed April 26, 2021. Owners may contact Tiffin customer service at 1-256-356-8661. Tiffin’s number for this recall is TIF-115.

RECALL INSPECTION AND REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS

 

NHTSA Recall #: 21V-265

TC #: 2021-231

Tiffin #: TIF-115

Models Involved: 2021 Phaeton Motorhomes with a Roof Mounted Power Awning Option built between May 8, 2020 and March 1, 2021.

 

Purpose: To provide instructions on how to check that the fairings are properly secured, and if not, how to re-secure or replace them.

 

TOOLS NEEDED:

Three-inch Scraper
Hand Towel
Adhesive Applicator
Wire Brush

 

PARTS NEEDED:

EXT 534 MMA Adhesive – Tiffin part# 5121243
Isopropyl Alcohol 75%
Roll of Masking Tape

 

INSPECTION PROCEDURE: 

 

1. Inspect the current fairings, looking for any gaps between the fairings and the fiberglass.

 

2. If you find a gap, use 20 lbs. of force to try to remove the fairing at the gap. If there is no gap, apply the force at the front of the fairing.

 

3. If the fairing does not lift up, the fairing is properly secured and no further action is required. If the fairing starts to lift away from the fiberglass, continue to step 4.

 

RE-INSTALL/REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE:

 

4. Continue to lift up on the fairing until the fairing has been completely removed.

 

5. Using a three-inch scraper remove the old adhesive from the roof.

 

6. Once all the adhesive has been removed, clean the surface of the roof using a hand towel and Isopropyl Alcohol 75%.

 

7. If the fairing was not damaged during removal, use a wire brush to remove any adhesive from the underside of the fairing. The surface of the underside of the fairing should be black in color.

 

8. Once all the adhesive has been removed, clean the underside of the fairing using a hand towel and Isopropyl Alcohol 75%.

 

Note: If attaching a new fairing, remove all the protective film from the new fairing before use.

 

9. Place a ¼” bead of EXT 534 MMA adhesive on the underside of the fairing as seen below.

 

10. Make sure to place the fairing in the same location on the roof as the previous one.

 

11. Press down on the fairing and hold it firmly in place. Place masking tape as seen below to hold the fairing in place while the adhesive cures.

 

12. Let the adhesive set for 45 minutes or until it has fully cured.

 

13. Remove the tape.

Fairing Wind Deflectors, 2021 Phaetons with Roof Mounted Power Awning Option

 

Dear Tiffin Motorhome Owner or Dealer,

 

For US Owners:  This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.  For Canadian Owners:  This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.  This is to inform you that your vehicle may contain a defect that could affect the safety of a person.

 

Tiffin Motorhomes has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists on the following models of motorhomes:  2021 Phaeton Motorhomes equipped with the Roof Mounted Power Awning Option.

 

Tiffin Motorhomes has become aware that there is the possibility of a defect on certain 2021 Phaetons that are equipped with a roof mounted power awning and that were built between May 8, 2020 and March 1, 2021.  On these specific motorhomes there is the possibility that the fairing wind deflectors mounted in front of the roof mounted power awning on the passenger side and the matching driver’s side fairing may not be properly secured and that either of the fairings may become detached while in transit.  If either of the fairings were to become detached from the motorhome, it could cause an injury or property damage to other vehicles.

 

Tiffin Motorhomes will have the fairings inspected and repaired if necessary.  Please arrange to take your motorhome to a reputable service center OR dealer of your choice to have this inspection completed and the repairs made if needed.  Once your appointment has been made, the dealer or service center you choose can contact Tiffin Motorhomes to obtain work instructions and billing information if they do not already have this information.  They can contact Tiffin Motorhomes at 256-356-8861 extension 2176 or by email at [email protected] . Please allow up to 15 minutes to have this inspection completed.  If the fairings are not securely attached to the roof and repair is needed, please allow another 1 hour per side for the repair.  This work will be completed at no charge to you, the owner.
